3 Tips For A Better Adsense CTR
Welcome to another guest post here on DSWM that should spark some awesome debate…Adsense is another topic that tends to do just that. I too am hoping to learn a thing or two from both the article and your responses below!
Please welcome Simon Rogers from Teenius.com.
If you’re using Adsense, no doubt you would have seen a little section that speaks about your ‘CTR’. Your CTR is a very important part of Adsense and for many people determines whether they make a little or a lot by using the program. This article will show you the three main tips for increasing your CTR and earning more through Adsense.
What is CTR?
CTR stands for ‘Click Through Rate’. This basically indicates what percentage of your visitors click one of the Adsense adverts. So if, for example, you get one hundred visitors and four clicks, you’ll have a CTR of 4%.
#1: Placement
Where you place your adverts will affect the CTR in a very big way. For example, if you put the adverts right at the bottom of the page, no one will see them, and therefore no one will click them. I recommend that you put them near the header, sidebar and even in content. Failing that, make sure the ads are in a prominent position where they’re bound to get noticed.
If you’re going to try and fiddle around with the placement of your adverts, make sure that you are following the Adsense Rules, as if you break them you’ll probably get banned and Google are known for hardly ever letting publishers back into the program.
#2: Coloring
The color that you have your Adverts is a major factor in CTR success. If you have a green advert on a black page, it will be obvious that it’s an advert and will therefore probably make your CTR worse. If, however, you blend in the background of the advert with the background of your page and put the text to the same colour as your content, you’re bound to get more clicks.
Again, be careful using this method as it’s very easy to breach the Adsense terms of service. From experience, I think the main point is to make sure that the ‘Ads by Google’ text is clearly visible.
#3: Use keyword rich content
The way Adsense chooses which adverts to display on your website is a very clever system. They automatically pull different keywords from your content and match the adverts to those words. Because of this, if you make sure you’re using keyword filled content that is relevant to your site’s niche, you’re bound to get clicks from people looking to buy products related to your site.
The rule to remember about using keyword rich content is that you still have a visitor to please, and you shouldn’t forget that. In the longer scheme of things, it’s much better to use well written content that engages readers than content that is hard to understand yet keyword rich.
Remember that the reader is king!
Something to say?
As always, we’re willing to hear any comments you have… whether it’s a compliment, a moan, criticism, advice… we don’t mind! Also, if you like the post, don’t forget to share it via the ‘Share and Enjoy’ options below

Regarding the content of your adsense website you will have to consider three “Readers”
1. The Human Reader
2. The search crawlers
3. The adsense code (because it will scan the page to serve relevant ads)

@Tai Slim, When you write for Adsense websites, you should try and write quality content whilst still using plenty of keywords. The keywords will sort out both the SEO and the adsense code

Besides the 3 I would mention:
- the overall layout of the site (how many other distractions)
- the niche (some have a lot more ads than others)
- the ad size and type
And each of these can be broken down into smaller details that are important.

@Simon: I thought you would mention rectangle ads, I have found rectangles, adsense for search and link units are my best earners.
Another thing that I sometimes do is block domains that are obviously not related to my sites and won’t really get good CTR.
I have tried section targeting with moderate success, want to learn this advanced technique deeply.

Frankly borders make sense depending on your site’s template. I avoid borders when ad is within content. Otherwise depending on rounded or rectangled borders, I also change my ad’s border.

@Mitch, Thanks for the comment. Borders in adsense aren’t usually that good because they stop the eyes wandering. Sounds a bit cheesy, but it’s true. Also, it makes it more obvious it’s an advert making it less appealing.
June 8th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I also find that if you work on it for a day or so, you can adjust your article title, meta data, and sub-headers so that the ads that post to that particular blog page become increasingly more relevant. I find this is more important even than the content on the page, and the “keyword stuffing” therein.

Can any readers of this post share their thoughts on ad placement? I would think above the fold is crucial, but top of the blog post area? On the side of the blog? What about at the very top of the browser window, before the header area?
Within the blog posts themselves? Always located at the end of the post, before the related articles/comments? What works best for everyone?

@gilbert, Are you a robot? I’m asking for a case study on a blog, where you can say something like:
A) don’t put ads on the top of your blog above the header; i have 0% CTR and get complaints consistently
B) advertising in the very bottom of the blog post above the comments has worked wonders
C) i have monkeyed around with siderail ads, and found that more than 5 ruins it for the users, but 3 or 4 is perfect. this is the 2nd most effective location.
That kind of response. Do you have anything like this to share?

@Matty Byloos, im just sharing a simple thoughts..
You didn’t said there a case study.. but here Matty hope your contented with this!..so you will not say again that i’m a robot what ever..
Header ads placement:
On the header on the top of your blog that consist of tittle or logo, nav bar and other elements. this thing are important in the design you can utilize the spaces above the header to place an ads. The header is the area most likely where the readers will look at first glance so considering the placing of banner ads.
Sidebar ads placement:
The upper area of a sidebar is great place for 125×125 block ads. They convert quite good and they are adjustable to fit most blogs. This for two Column.
And for the three column, try placing a skyscraper ad in the middle column if you have a double-right or double-left sidebar. Your readers will scan their eyes over it to look at the far-sidebar elements, so you may end up converting a bit more efficiently.
Content ads placement:
Posts are a great place to position your ads. You can do this is three ways the images, contextual ads, or affiliate linking. Images can be very effective if you place them near the top of the post. People often scan for the titles of posts, so place your image ads near the title. Use a simple text wrap around an image. Contextual ads are a great way to advertise on your blog. Just make sure that your SEO is properly done, and your content is written in a manner that the ads program can have the proper keywords for targeted ads. If you are considering placing of affiliate links in articles it should be related to your affiliate offers.
Footer Ad Placements
The footer is not a place that would recommend placing an ads. It is generally one of the lesser trafficked areas on any web-page. It is recommended to keep ads within the posts and the upper portion of your blog.

@Matty Byloos, Truthfully, the best place for any Adsense ad is to the left of your content, within your content. That’s where most people will see it if they’re going to read your content. The left because, at least in most of the world, we read left to right. If I put it directly into the content, I don’t ever put it right at the top, but will drop it to the second or third paragraph.
After that, you can do the left sidebar, if you have one, or the very top. Just remember, only 3 Google ads are allowed per page, not including the search bar thing.

As well as that, try and put the ads somewhere high up in the blog as this means it’s the first thing people see when they login to your site!
June 9th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I think once I go through and do better keyword optimization on my site, I will add the Adsense back in. Before, especially on the homepage, it was putting in some unrelated ads and not doing so well. I still have it in individual posts and feeds, but will have to do some work before I put it elsewhere.

Using a Blogger template, and not being a pro in template html codings sure limit my placement of adsense in my blog. Although I don’t really aim for monetizing my blog using Adsense for the time being, I’m testing the placement just to see how it works and get familiarized.
No.2 is important though, as I’ve been to some forums where users are asking ‘how to eliminate ‘ads by Google’ wordings’. Uh-oh, bad move.
Thanks for this brief intro about CTR, need to study more on this.

Definitely the most important three points they are… Another important factor to improve the earnigns is to present the AdSense block only to your search visitors. This will improve CTR and earnings per click!
As for the font color on Ad links, it is better to use a shade brighter than your actual anchor color.

Here another tips in that could help you in increasing your CTR.
1. Make sure that your ads that appears in your content are related to your content because if not it will have a small possibility that visitor will not click on your ads.
Here are some tips on your content:
- Create a keyword rich content.
- Check your keyword rich content and then mark some of your keywords as bold or italic
- Use your keyword in your page title
- Use HTML tags
2. Use wide ads like 336×280, 300×250 or 250×250.
3. Blending your ads with your website themes also helps.
4. Place your Google Adsense in these positions:
- Above the fold is the top position of your page that’s visible without your visitor having to scroll down.
- In the middle of an article.
This works well if your article is long (more than 500 words).

5. Use Link Unit, it is the most profitable format if put in the right place.
6. Place an image near your ads, user tends to look at this section.
7. Use channels to track your ads performance.
8. Include Google Search Box in your website.
9. Increase your traffic by doing SEO (Search Engine
Optimization), then submitting your website to several search engines, directories, free articles directories, doing link baiting, and many more.
10. If you have many interests, do not put them into a single website. You better create several websites for each of them.

12. Be patient. You will not t become a millionaire within a night. Everything takes time (unless you already have huge amount of traffic).

@gilbert, I think the idea of having many interests and then segmenting those ideas into multiple websites is a strong one. Makes SEO so much easier, too, which has to make adsense work better.

@Matty Byloos, yes i agree with you, search engines hope to use page segmentation to be able to asses a more finite understanding of a given pages relevancy, but also be capable of dealing with multi-topic pages, semantically related or not.

@gilbert, The idea of multi-topic page understanding, and then relevant ad serving/placement for those pages, is an exciting one. I have a blog about culture, but I’m a painter and a writer, and I’m interested in things as diverse as Japanese film and online marketing. To have relevant ads on the home page of the blog for whatever latest 5 entries might be, would just be awesome.

Great AdSense tips Simon. I also notice adding a line above an ad like “More Acne Resources” or “Further Acne Resources” considering the site is about acne here can increase CTR. If you provide some valuable content which have your keywords, the ads can reflect things about your content and as a result, this can prove to be valuable resources to compliment what you have already provided.

Click through rate is a good way to earn some great accumulated income. But placement of ads should be so strategic that it does not hinder with the main website n also bring some good number of clicks. The total layout of the page should be in sync with ads as it will look absurd and thus ruining the whole outlook.

# You should make your Adsense ads look as a part of your web page
They shouldn’t look like an Ad. People are negative to advertising. They search the internet for content not ads. Especially Banners have a less of 0,5% response. Their days are over. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable.
# Text ads are better than image ads
Like before, people are more responsive to text than images. In a way it is considered as a part of the online document and has higher CTR.
# No Border ads
One of the best tricks is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them again having the same color with your website’s background.
# No other advertisements
The first reason is to be legitimate according to Google’s Rules and the second more practical reason is that you do not want to distract your visitor’s attention and go somewhere else without clicking your Adsense ads.
# Placement
Even if you have the best Ad, people will not respond if they don’t see it instantly. The best place to see the ad is the top of your web page and the next is aside your document’s text. Visitors will click it more frequently since it will look like your text.
# Traffic
Try to use legitimate ways of traffic. Some people use Google Adwords and other Pay per Click search engines. The problem here is to search very carefully for the right niche and keywords in order to make your campaigns profitable. Other ways is link popularity techniques like link exchange directories, software or even mass blog submission techniques. Don’t use link farms and classifieds for that, because search engine’s algorithms are extremely clever and they will ban your listings.
# Do not rely on one website
Yes you can make money with one website but try to make as more as possible.
# Relevant content is King
Articles are one of the best tactics to create huge websites that will be crawled by search engine’s robots. Don’t forget search engines exist to provide relevant content at first. One excellent resource to automate your article directory procedure is articleequalizer.com .You can create an article database in minutes which otherwise is time consuming and it would take you a week!
# Use site maps
Google’s site maps visit your site and crawl it much sooner that any other submission process. More information is here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps
# Relevant ads
It’s one of the most important factors for Adsense success. If the internet user can’t find relevant ad in your page he or she won’t click the ad. Would you act differently? So it’s critical to create relevant resource for your web page. In order to do that, you must do the following steps.

I have always inserted Adsense ads into my sites because I do understand they can generate income, however I have never had much luck with it. I tend to place my ads on the right hand side towards the top. I have always stayed away from ads inserted into the text because they annoy me. Maybe I’ll have to try your suggestions. Thanks!
September 10th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Placement of Adsense ads does make a difference in the CTR from what I’ve found. I’ve spend the past year playing around with the ads and found that those inserted in the main body close to the top of the page get the best CTR for me.

Anyway I don’t use Adsense heavliy but I do agree with what you said, especially about color and positioning. I have used this at the top of the page under the header and got good results.

As ever the only way to really find out what works best on your site/niche is to tweak things and test the results.

Regarding the colouring. As I am new to this sort of thing, I would have guessed that something distinct to make the ads stand out would be better. But you’re saying to have them blend in? I suppose that makes sense, as the ads then look more like part of the content. Thanks for the tips, I will definately experiment with it.

That was a very interesting stuff for a better Adsense. I strongly agree with you that where you place your advert matter a lot
December 9th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Great stuff for Adsense beginners! In my opinion, the color scheme of an adsense block should fit well with the scheme of the page. Ads that stand out too much just scream “Don’t click me!”
I like to use image ads with very plain blog themes that don’t have many pictures. It draws the reader’s eye to the ad because the rest of the page is so boring. I haven’t had a chance to test whether or not this improves CTR.
I’ve read from a couple of bloggers who make good money with Adsense that using large text ad units (320px wide for example), with large text increases CTR.
I don’t know if anyone else does this, but if I really like someone’s blog, I’ll just click one of their Adsense ads as a “thank you”. lol.
