$5 Paypal For The Best Favicon Idea!
A favicon (short for favorites icon), also known as a website icon, shortcut icon, url icon, or bookmark icon is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. Source.
That’s right! A very fast post today. I need a Favicon for this URL and personally I have no clue.
The one that comments below with the best idea for a Favicon wins a quick and easy $5 bucks via Paypal (including fees
)
On top of that, EVERYONE that participates honestly (an individual idea) gets a courtesy link-back in the follow-up winners post!
(Come to think of it, if you know how to make and install one, that’s good too.)
So, what’s your idea?
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

hi Dennis,
I’d recommend the winking smiley guy that you use a lot in your comment responses and that you used above. It might be copyrighted though…
As to how to make and install one…
if you click through on your wiki link (which I did to figure out what a favicon is), there is a link on that page that says: How to Add a Favicon to your Site - QA @ W3C.

Steve - woohoo! LOL
I must ask, huh? What winking smiley guy??
While waiting for the answer, I must say for all those listening, that is not such a good idea. Hehe, sorry buddy.
Favicons should serve the same type of purpose as logo’s…identifiable to who you are/what you do and so forth.
Please don’t leave me over this.
I’m glad the link helped and I’ll check it further for those installation instructions. Thanks!

just now that I think of it, why don´t you use the logo you are already using on your gravator?
You are the upcoming commenting king and people are already “getting used” to that logo, so it makes sense you use it as a favicon.
There are easy ways to turn that one into your favicon (google make a favicon and the first link you will see is real easy to use)
cheers!
ps, didn´t mean to “spam” … the smiley didn´t show up

Dennis, I agree with the others - use your gravatar icon for instant brand recognition!
All you have to do is save it as a 16×16 .ico format (I think 32×32 also works?), and upload it to the root of your site. They tend to be a bit temperamental, so don’t panic if it doesn’t show up straightaway.

Hmm.. It’s tough to say since this blog has no logo but I’d say that it’d be best to udr the same 125×125 button which says De as in your avatar in 40×40 size! Trust me, it is the best I think would suit this blog!

Oops my bad, I should have seen this coming.
The DE logo is for overall branding….comments, social networking sites, and like that; as well as the logo for my personal blog/hub - launching shortly.
Each blog/site I create will have it’s own 125 for advertising and it’s own Favicon for the URL (not necessarily the same thing).
Sorry for the confusion. Like I said, I never saw that coming, but I should have….I was tired.
The good news is, everyone that mentioned the DE logo now has another shot at winning!

BUT, it would be small enough not to scare people away! Hehe.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Dennis, in my view you should wait for your logo to be launched for Direct Sales Web Marketing and use the same thing as a Favicon. This should be an identity for your blog and not your name, as someone suggested.
In fact, I have my logo ready for my blog. Just the placement issues.

If disagreeing with my suggestion for Mr Winkie is the worst criticism I get here, I won’t be leaving.
I agree with the goal that it should create a memorable brand if it is possible. But if not, I thought it should create a positive feeling.
Can you give us a link or two to websites that use these Favicons? Might help the creative juices to see some in action.
To my mind though, its tough to capture a brand in a 16×16 pixel image… is that the right size?

hi Dennis,
I’m guessing I didn’t know what a favicon was because I still us IE6 on my main computer and never seen them. The browser and all my bookmarks (and google’s website) have the little “e” for Internet Explorer. I’ve really got to download and install Firefox. Just don’t want to mess anything up, but more and more website don’t work with IE6 and I’m hesitant to go to IE7 (hate upgrading).
Anyway, I’ll be curious to see what can be done with that 16×16 pixel box.

Dennis,
I hate when a question keeps kicking around in the back of my head and distracting me from working.
Anyway, I googled “favicon gallery”.
First result was a real cool website with a ton of real examples and if you mouse over them, you get the the website’s opinion.
Plus there’s a link to a “favicon generator” where it looks like you can upload ANY image and it will make it the right size, plus instructions for installing.
you can check out the gallery here:

Anyway, my latest suggestion to build on one above is a green dollar sign on a gold circle (coin).

Dennis,
it is not that difficult to make a favicon and there is even a WP favicon plugin which you can use - I use it at my site. I haven’t gone around to designing one for my site yet..using a preloaded one.
How about a big D and smaller font SMW inside it or just simply DE for your name?

Dennis, I have a similar kind of a header in my blog too. You need to design a logo such a way that it embeds the text ‘Direct Sales Web Marketing’ in it with a stylish background. Replace the text here on the top with the Logo. Whatever the stylish background you use in the logo, use it as a Favicon!
This way you also have a branding for your site!

JR - Don’t ever suggest displaying ED to a guy….and if you don ‘t get that I’m not explaining it. LOL
November 19th, 2008 at 10:30 am
First, you’ve got to add a “reply” thing onto your blog.
Second, think of it this way. Your site is called Direct Sales Web Marketing. Many people still call it the “World Wide Web”. Therefore, your web would be covering the globe, having it green indicates “money”, and making sure it still had continents on it makes people know you’re talking about “our world”. Now, you’re talking favicons; if you wanted to make it your logo, which means it would be bigger, then you could have the business initials in a different colors spanning the globe also.

For all those that are mentioning the Logo thing please stop. LOL Aside from the fact that I don’t have one for this blog yet…..
It’s a fantastic thought as far as branding goes, but as I mentioned above (shame on you for not reading
) it is extremely difficult, if not nearly impossible to shrink a logo with words or even just letters so it is still readable.
Unless of course it’s just a G.
November 19th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Tara - I can’t wait to see your new logo!
November 19th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Mitch - I KNOW! I’m already looking for a 12-step program for plugin junkies! LOL
I’m desperately trying to wait it out for WP 2.7 (stable NOT BETA) which has the reply thing built in (no plugin needed hehe)
Thanks for the explanation. UNIQUE to say the least! I’m not sure the concept would “come through” on a tiny Favicon, but a very cool logo it might make…..for which you would get credit if I used it.
