50 Social Bookmarking Sites. What Are The Top 5-10 Most Popular?
Hello everyone, how are ya?
This is not the same as asking about your favorite Social Networking sites. Now I’m asking what your opinion is on the most poplular Social Bookmarking sites are overall.
You see, I’m switching out my ShareThis plugin, for this one.
It has come to my attention (and really should have been obvious), that more readers will bookmark a post if it’s easier to do so.
Having to click a link, then push the button, clearly isn’t easiest. Duh me. So I’m going with one that automatically shows the icons (with the option to hide behind a link).
This one is very cool as it comes preloaded with 50 - f i f t y - sites. There also in-lies the problem. As you can see below this post, 50 is clearly too intrusive and unnecessary.
The super cool part is the fact that you have the option of adding or deleting sites simply by checking or unchecking the boxes…..this is where your opinion comes in so handy.
Out of the following list, I’m looking for the top 5-10 (maximum) most popular:
BlinkBits
* BlinkList
* Bloglines
* Blogmemes
* BUMPzee
* Blogmarks
* Blue Dot
* Co.mments
* Connotea
* De.lirio.us
* Del.icio.us
* Diigo
* digg
* DotNetKicks
* DZone
* Facebook
* Fark
* Feed Me Links
* Fleck
* FriendSite
* FURL
* Google Bookmarks
* Kaboodle
* LinkaGoGo
* Ma.gnolia
* Maple
* Mister Wong
* Netscape
* Netvouz
* Newsvine
* PlugIM
* PopCurrent
* RawSugar
* reddit
* Rojo
* Shoutwire
* Simpy
* Sk*rt
* Slashdot
* SphereIt
* Stumble Upon
* Squidoo
* Spurl
* Taggly
* Tailrank
* Technorati
* ThisNext
* Webride
* Wists
* Yahoo My Web
I’ve only even heard of a handful of them myself LOL. Soooo, whatcha think? Top 5-10 only, no need for links.
I think it should be very interesting to see how answers may or may not vary.
A shout-out goes to Acakadut, a regular reader here for reminding me I wanted to do this (even though she has no idea lol), when I noticed her own bookmarking widget. Check out her blog, she’s got some nifty-neato stuff on there…don’t forget to tell her who sent ya!

Thanks for the heads up I will look at that plugin, I wouldn’t want too many icons showing, maybe just the few I am aware of.
Digg, StumbleUpon, Facebook, Bloglines to name a few.

That plugin looks interesting only because it has some sites that mine doesn’t include, specifically bloglines.
My top 5, Bloglines, digg, stumble, blog engage and reddit

Truthfully, I only use Technorati and Delicious, though my blogs do show up on Facebook, and someone told me that I’ve been StumbledUpon, though I don’t have an account there so I couldn’t begin to tell you.

JR - I had a Sphinn button for a while, but it started messing with other things and creating weird visible code.
I never did figure it out and just uninstalled it.
I may suggest the other 3 *any topic* ones to the plugin author and see what he thinks…I still don’t know how to install the icons on my own.

Mitch - Even if you don’t use them yourself, you really should offer the options to your readers…these plugins are awesome.
Besides, you’re not really supposed to submit your own posts
most get pretty upset with too much of that.

Hi Dennis. If you look at the right side of my blog, you see I have a widget called Spread The Word, and there are some services listed there. I had no idea what StumbleUpon was there until recently, or some of the others, but I can add some others, as right now I only have six set up. I just didn’t know anyone was really doing it.
However, Delicious does encourage you to post your article there, so I do take advantage of that.

Mitch - On the sidebar is excellent, that’s where I used to have my Social Networks..but you really should have some (5-10? lol) bookmarking sites directly under each post.
That way it’s a no thinker for someone to submit directly after reading

I used to have it on every post, Dennis, but it looked horrible sitting there when I first did it so I took it off. I may have to look into it again and see if I can change the look just a little bit.

How many did you have? I remember when I first installed this plugin I kept ALL of them, cause I thought it was cool and would get me mega bookmarks LOL
Not so much….

I use the WP plugin -sociable to add the social bookmarking sites at the bottom of each post which kinda blends in with the post.
Not to sure if anyone uses it after reading my posts though

@Dominique - I also use Sociable plugin on all my blogs. Main reasons being that it does not take a lot of the server resources, unlike Share This plugin. And, it’s easier for visitors to share post - just one click away.

Although most sites promote many of these, as you want to give your users as many options as possible in case they only use one service, the ones I see most on websites are:
Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Delicious, & Technorati

List - Honestly, I debated on whether or not to approve your comment, due to it being very spam-like, please be careful in your future commenting…on any blog, not just here.
At the very least, leave a first name somewhere.
However I do feel this could be useful to my readers, so thank you.
