  • Are You Like Jack?

Recently, I was chatting a bit with a good friend and colleague of mine, Patty Gale. Patty and I have known each other for some time now, starting with a few forums we would frequent.

Doing the forum marketing as we do, you inevitably run into the same person time and time again…

Enter, *Jack*. He or she (Jack is Asexual) posts everywhere but never really seems to get anywhere. The sad part is, Jack really can’t understand why most of the time.

Patty wrote a cool little article about Jack, which I want to share with you now. Get to know Jack, learn from Jack, as he will teach you very important lessons in what NOT to do in business…

“Meet Jack… Jack of all Trades. He’s very good friends with Master of None. You could say they are joined at the hip.

Perhaps you personally know Jack? While Jack has all good intentions of creating a very profitable business, he can’t seem to stay focused.

He finds what appears to be a great opportunity and jumps on board. A short while later, Jack gets bored and starts searching for the next “great opportunity” without giving the first opportunity any chance of succeeding.

He’s fallen “in love” with many different kinds of products. However, he still doesn’t have a business plan, doesn’t have long-term vision or commitment.

He then wonders why he isn’t getting anywhere.

Master of None is the end result of Jack’s indecision, lack of focus, lack of planning and repeatedly hopping from one business opportunity to the next.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t try new things until you find what works for you?

No, of course not, but there is a huge difference between Jack and those who see their business as an evolution from one step to the next in moving forward.

People do business with people they know and trust. People do business with the “expert” in that field, the “go to person” and those who establish themselves as a solid business owner.

    Don’t be like Jack.

While you will be moving forward and upward, Jack will still be side-stepping and hopping from one thing to the next, hoping for the “next big thing” and never creating any real long-term success.

Have you met Jack? Are YOU perhaps him or her? Leave me your thoughts on Jack below ;)

    Never stop pushing forward!
    Dennis

    2. Mike Collins Says:

Staying focused is one of the biggest challenges to making money online. Its so easy to jump around from one idea to the next, but the key is to find something that works for you and stick with it.

    3. Leo Wurschmidt Says:

The great thing about the Internet and search engine marketing is that the web really is built for niche companies. Where a company may not be able to sell a lot of niche items A in their city, they can reach a much larger audience who are searching for that specific item from all across the globe.

This is where the irony starts to enter because people then try to overreach in who they are and what they are and get lost in becoming Jack.

A lot of time setting focused is a very hard thing to do. Your was tempted to jump on the bandwagon of the latest and greatest. You’re absolutely correct if you’re always Switching directions you’ll never get anywhere.

Hello I would just like to introduce myself. My name is Jack and I get bored easily. I also can hardly ever make up my mind and stick with one thing. Thank you. haha man I am totally Jack to the Tee

I agree with the comments above. Just keep doing what you do, stick with it and will come together eventually and I think this is the hard part in making money online.

    7. Dennis Says:

Savvy (please read comment policy) - this article was primarily written for Direct Sales/MLM consultants. They are he ones you mostly see jumping from company to company or even joining multiples at once…which rarely works out well.

Online or off you’re always better with a “niche”. Planning, Focus, Hardwork, and Endurance is exactly right, but, one thing at a time is best for most. :)

Welcome to the blog, I hope to see you ’round more often!

    8. Dennis Says:

Mike - focus was my issue for a looooooong time. This certainly isn’t my first time blogging.

This blog itself was even started long before last November (1st post showing) but I changed direction a few times before it stuck ;)

    9. Dennis Says:

Leo - truly ironic ain’t it? Just like joining too many offline companies, people get so caught up thinking they can please all niches that they get way to strung out…

Granted, some make pretty good money afterwards selling off sites they don’t need, but that’s not the norm :-)

    10. Dennis Says:

John - it’s a daily struggle my man, but well worth it in the end…I hope ;)

    11. Dennis Says:

Ryan - err - Jack - err - anyhoo (lol) you and me both brother! I am so the same way. Not necessarily because of “boredom”, but there are sooo many ideas flying around my noggin that it really is a daily struggle as I mentioned to John.

If you ever need help with anything, never hesitate to ask ;)

    12. Dennis Says:

Salwa - I do agree for the most part. Once you “got your thing”, it gets a little easier to focus and start producing on it :)

    13. kahthan Says:

i think a few years ago i might have been jack, then through some sheer luck i ended up with a couple of very successful websites and eventually learned what i needed to at the time.. sold the websites and took a break for various reasons…

far forward about 5 years and im learning all over again now but this time with a vision and a plan and most importantly targets and goals that i can aim for :)

    14. Mitch Says:

Good post, and I agree,… to a point. I’ll admit that I’m someone who has morphed into a position where I have, well, multiple businesses, or professions. I only started out with one, had to add one quickly because it was my background, then others have grown out of that as I’ve gone along. I’ve worked for myself for 7 years, and I feel I’m pretty good at all except one, which is the internet marketing that I’m trying to learn right now (as you see with the latest CommentLuv there), but sometimes you get redefined by the people around you and not necessarily yourself.

But I’ll save that tale for another day. :-)

Excellent story Kahthan, I’d love to see an article about those target and goals ;)

    17. Dennis Says:

You hit the key button right there with “morphing”. You didn’t enter-join-start-buy (whatever) multiple businesses all the the same week-month-year (I assume).

There’s the BIG difference. If I read that right, you didn’t hop repeatedly looking for the “next big thing”, but rather one led into another and so on, somewhat connected, am I right?

    18. Dennis Says:

I find it interesting that you find it interesting, what’s up with that? ;)

    19. Sire Says:

Actually I always figured that a Jack Of All trades was a good thing because he could do a bit of everything. I sometimes consider myself to be one and I can just about do all the small jobs and thereby save myself heaps by not calling in the pros for those jobs.

    20. Dennis Says:

You forgot his conjoined twin, Master of None, and they work together…

Sure if you can fix granny’s door-window-vcr and toaster all in one day, that’s fantastic.

Not even a little close to what we’re discussing here though. ;)

One may be able to run 4-5 businesses at the same time ,and maybe even make a couple hundred from each, each month.

They will NEVER and I mean EVER be able to put any *real weight* behind ANY of them, and most often quit (usually all of them) within 1 year.

    21. Sire Says:

Now that all depends on the business and the staff. If you have the right staff and they have been trained properly there one could easily run 5 or even more business, as long as each one is running properly before the next one is started.

I agree with your master of none principle just not the Jack Of all Trades analogy. If anything the master of none is holding his twin back and jack needs to offload his deadbeat brother.

    22. Dennis Says:

I think you’re getting a wee ahead of the game here; staff?

Yes, anyone with an office of people and a good 6 figures of revenue per year or more can run multiple businesses with little effort.

Continents away from what we’re discussing here buddy, lol.

    23. Sire Says:

Oops, that’s whats comes of being in business too long. My mistake, I reckon I was getting ahead of myself after all.

    25. JR @ Internet Marketing Strategies Says:

Great post Dennis! You often see this in affiliate marketing as well, those we call the Information Junkies, the keep jumping and getting dsitracted by one “great” thing to the other to the other and yet another, without ever taking action on anything

    26. Dennis Says:

JR - I am quite guilty of this one myself. Many affiliate folders in my email and not much activity….gettin’ on it though!

    27. Andy Says:

Dennis - This happens to a lot of people. This happened to me a few times. Know, I only take on one project at a time and focus on that.

When I was a kid, my dad used to say, “Jack of all trades, master of none” I never really understood what he was talking about until I started my own business.
