Do You Have Blank Blog Advertisement Slots?
Nope sorry, I’m not looking to buy one. I’m here to give you the awesome advice that was given to me when I first started blogging…..get rid of them NOW.
I’m sure you’ve seen it, you may even do it yourself (and some of you I know do it). Those blogs that have anywhere between two and TEN 125×125 ad spots that simply say, “ADVERTISE HERE“, right out there for the world to see. I’ve even seen some use FLASH!
Aye Curumba.
Do you know how it looks to potential advertisers? BAD. Real bad. Amateurish in the least, but D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E at it’s worst. I’m not saying this to make anyone upset or angry with me, this is the honest to goodness truth as told to me those many moons ago. They are not doing you any good.
This is definitely one thing that falls under whether or not advertisers judge your design.
Here’s a few tips that may help (in no particular order)…
1. If you must have something in a few spots, pick some affiliates. Make some money until potentials start knockin’ and affiliate marketing is a great start.
2. If you have more then one blog/site, put yourself in there.
3. If you use OIO Publisher, or something similar that provides “stat” updates to advertisers - offer some up real cheap or even free. If their CTR (click through rate) is decent, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t return with money next month.
That’s just 3 off the top of my head. The point is, just get rid of the *blank*. If you offer blog advertising for sale, set up an advertising page…THAT’S where you explain what’s open
.
————————————
OK, one of two (or both) things I’d like to see answered below…
Did I just describe your blog? Was it helpful or just piss you off? (Or both lol)
Do you have additional advice to add to my 3 suggestions? We’d love to hear ‘em!
Dennis

I can understand having a bunch of blank spots on your blog looks bad for it. I myself before reading this article had a few spot on there. I have now filled them all but one but will probably fill that up but evenings end.

Indeed. Yes, I’ve never understood blank spots. And like you, I always encourage people to use affiliate programs until they get sponsors.
One other approach is not to show any advertising spots and have a prominent link to an advertising page in which you give potential advertisers/companies more information.

Great advice, Dennis. I’ve never shown those types of ad spaces in the first place, but might give it a try using your advice in place of the blank spots. I’ve got plenty of affiliate links to showcase, so that won’t be a problem.

I put affiliates in those places and have one spot I still need to fill. I just left it completely blank for now until I get it filled but after reading this I will probably make it more of a priority.

I agree. Personally, I have always thought it looked kind of tacky, especially when so much of internet marketing, and for that matter blog marketing, can be done pro-actively.
If you are going to do anything, it seems like an “advertise with us” link or some contact info would be the way to go.

You’ve almost said all. Now if you have blank spots, it’s advisable to create an “Advertise” page where you pitch the world why they should advertise on yours. Past statistics and testimonials work wonder sometimes.

I think if anything, you should only ever have one advertising spot open for the general public to see. This will let people who want to advertise on your site know that you have a spot available. When you get that spot filled, get rid of one of your affiliate products and repeat the process until you are completed filled with all paid advertisers

This post is totally talking about my site, I don’t know if it makes any difference or not, but I try to mix it up a little bit by not having all of the “Advertise Here” spots be exactly the same.
In the past I have tried to limit and/or remove them, but I don’t have a whole “network” of sites to link to yet and if I just randomly put other people’s ads in there, where is there incentive to pay for it?
Hopefully I’ll get this resolved by the end of the year

But i absolutely agree with you, having a series of 8 banners with no real purpose, is a waste of precious precious web real estate.
Guys - fill those sidebar spots up smartly.

I completely pulled all ads from my main site but that’s a different story. I didn’t give it much thought before but I think you are right Dennis, it probably does hurt the rep using those ‘advertise here’ banners.
It’s seems much more professional to have a separate page for adverting. A link in the footer, or header for that matter. If someone wants to advertise they’ll find the link. That banner isn’t going to sell an advertiser on advertising.

I like these ideas — do a loss leader, try some affiliate marketing, or push some traffic around to your other sites. Why not also give one away occasionally to a non-profit organization, like a charity situation? Or do an ad swap with a similar site whose traffic you might benefit from?

Thanks Dennis. The loss leader idea would be giving the ad space away to someone, then coming back a month later after some great traffic and or sales results based on the giveaway, thereby enabling you to sell the spot rather than give it away, or else have a case study where you could sell the space to another advertiser.

@Matty Byloos, I like these as well. I had the barter idea for my personal blog, which I’ll be announcing soon.

I agree with the blank “advertise here blocks” but I think the Tip me would have a positive effect that it isn’ filled up because that would indicate the tip will get a link for a longer time.

@Rick Bicycle Hangar, Exactly right Rick, thanks for the input and welcome to the community!
Although the tip links may be coming down soon.

Dennis,
If one uses OIO Publisher to manage his ads on his blog, don’t you think he should leave one default blank one. It’s supposed to facilitate quick processing to let the blogger click it, read about the pricing and buy if he is interested. Saves the next step of email communication.

@Peter@passive income ideas, I haven’t used OIO yet, is that the only way it works? One is ok if it’s a must.

@Dennis Edell, yeah we usually put just one although when an existing banner ad expires, it is automatically removed and shows 2 blanks but you can then fill one up with one of your own.

Hi Dennis,
This is something I haven’t had to worry about as my blog design didn’t allow for banner slots. I can see how having blank spots would detract from the overall appearance and look bad to potential advertisers.
Just recently I decided to make room and put my own banners up after one of my subscribers inquired about advertising. I then realized that I would eventually need room for them.
I’ve looked into IOI Publisher, but I’m not famous enough yet to bother using it

@Alan @ Work At Home Resources,
LOL I don’t think you need to be famous. It’s my understanding that the plugin simply makes advertising life easier, regardless of “level”.

@Dennis Edell,
Yes that’s true. But until I get potential advertisers wanting to advertise on my blog, I don’t think it’s worth buying it just yet. I do, however, have an advertising page that they can view.

@Alan @ Work At Home Resources,
True, but keep your eyes open anyway; they’re always passing around coupon codes for it.

@Dennis Edell,
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. I think it would be more beneficial to first get a good readership and a bit of traffic in the eyes of an advertiser, though.

@Alan @ Work At Home Resources, Absolutely. I didn’t mean to use it right away, but if you can pick it up for half off or whatever, grab it…if you do plan to use it eventually.

i have heard of oio publisher but don’t use it because i got a lot of people telling me that you need to spend 47 dollars and than after that you make money when someone else buys it but who would spend money to join a program when they can join thousands more for free thats what i don’t get

@almir, You could make money on their affiliate program if they have one, but the purpose of the program is to make your ad selling experience easier, not to make money off the program itself.

i currently have 8 ads on my site because i don’t think my site looks cluttered from them but never thought about using the empty slots on my site before

hehe. Guilty! I have actually have the thought myself on how those “blank” spots, made me blog appear. Now it’s confirmed :/ so I am of to remove a couple of spots and fill in the rest with some affiliate banners…or remove them?

@Casper Christensen, First, welcome to the community Casper!
I see you currently have 6 spots. I’d personally fill 2-4 with affiliates to start as long as they “fit”, and delete the rest unless you can get advertisers.
I also notice you are offering ad spots for free on the new blog, this is an awesome idea as long as you have a way to track clicks; do you?

Sorry, at the moment no. I am not sure how I should go about this, as I do not want a some heavy script on my site. If there is some small an easy one out there let me know, or perhaps a plugin.
Well, I’ll start by deleting a couple of them as you say. I can always add them again in the future if needed;)

@Casper Christensen,
There are two ad management programs (plugins).
Max Banner Ads - http://www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/mba/
OIO Publisher - http://www.oiopublisher.com/
MBA is free and yet more swear by OIO. Let me know if you decide to purchase OIO; I can give you a $10 off coupon.

@Dennis Edell,
Thanks for the links. I am going to take a look at them both, and decide what I need.
I might also try to see if I can add a script of my own to the wordpress theme without increasing the loadtime:)
