For me blogroll are more important for building up a community of bloggers. I have a small blogroll and it links to only blogs that I read as often as I can and which I personally recommend to my readers. I don’t care if the blogs I link to link back to me. I do it because I want to. I have to read a blog for a long time before I’d consider adding it to my blogroll.I agee that intext links are a good way to reference other blog posts and I do that when appropriate.I don’t see a conflict between intext links and blogroll links. Thanks for sharing it.

When i read what you wrote under blogroll, all i could say was whooow! This is what really drew my interest “The real kick in the teeth with blogroll link swaps is the ease of which the 2nd party can screw you and you may not even realize it for who knows how long.” how can one handle this issue.

Well, as I said to Rian, I don’t know if blogrolls in particular have or haven’t lost value (good research topic).

Most people do use them as a simple shout out to other blogs they like and want others to see as well…no SEO in mind, really.

As you say it can be really good for finding blogs in a particular niche.

Interesting. I didn’t realize blogrolls no longer hold much value, but it makes sense, with link swapping and text link sales all over the internet. The relevancy of search results can become diluted if blogrolls are taken into account.

When I made niche blogs (following a particular eCourse), I used a blogroll as part of my overal SEO strategy. Seemed to work pretty well, but incontent links do make a lot more sense. (The eCourse used those as well).

I do read other blog rolls if they catch my eye, but I find them hard to read sometimes. I’m much more likely to click an incontent link!

I do like blogrolls that actually link to blogs that relate to the topic I’m looking for information on. In that case, I hop from blog to blog, reading a post here and there. I’ve found tons of great blogs this way!
