Did You Know You Can Refund Domain Names?
Yep it’s true! I just refunded my 3rd or 4th and figured I’d post about it. I figured beginners and/or those on a real limited budget would be especially interested.
Heck, 10 bucks is 10 bucks, right? (If you’re paying more then that per year, switch registrars altogether.)
I’m not sure about other registrars, but Godaddy (and their resellers) offer a 5-day leeway policy.
If for any reason you no longer need/want your domain name, you have 5 days from the purchase date to receive a full refund…no partial refunds after that.
This was once HUGE with domain flipping and MFA (made for adsense) site builders; I couldn’t say if it is anymore.
I must say though, I’d think one would need some serious *traffic gettin* mojo to decide in 5 days or less if adsense was working.
Anyhoo there ya go, so go get your 10er back if ya need to.
I’ve never used any other then Godaddy. If you know other registrars that offer this, please let me know below…I will update this post.
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

The only time I could see that of being any use would be if for some reason you found out you didn’t spell your domain correctly or you hit upon a better name. 5 days would be plenty of time for that.

I did not know that. I registered a domain a while back that I accidentally misspelled. Damn I could have got my cash back on it, instead I let it sit.
Thanks for the info.

Sire - Ironically the latter is what happened to me this time around. I bought one yesterday and found a better one today.

Steve - Welcome to the community!
Sorry to hear that though. However if it’s a popular misspelling, it’s worth forwarding it to the correct site…you could get some nice traffic from it.
November 10th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
ZK - Misspelled domains used to be big business also, but i think Google nixed that a bit too.
November 10th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
As I said in the post though, this was once HUGE with domain flipping and MFA (made for adsense) site builders…quite possibly still is.
I’ve never done either personally, although I do have a couple domains I’ll be looking to unload.
November 10th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I did not know about this before.
If one thinks of a domain name and then rethinks that he/she should get the refund.
Thanks for the info.

Dennis, this is why I luv blogging. Every time, I (and you) get to know something new. Wish this is the case with all the Providers and not just GoDaddy. It would be very useful if others follow!!! Subscribed!!!

I didn’t actually realise you could make refunds on domain names, thats pretty cool! Only problem is I buy then and then have them sit there for a couple of months before I know what to do with them, haha!

Hey Arun, thanks for the subscribe my friend! I won’t let ya down.

Dan my man you are not alone! Over the past couple years I have no idea how many I just “let go”….I’m sure many others have as well.
I hope this now helps you out in future purchases.
November 11th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Riyanne - I’m sorry to hear that, but don’t give up. You can always try to sell it, even if you just get your original 10spot back.
(I don’t mean to be picky, but you may want to fix the “the” in your contest post title.)

A little OT here Arun, but since you’re playing off my side comment to Riyanne, and I do have somewhat of an unnatural attraction to CommentLuv, I’ll take it! LOL
On that note, those registered for the contest need to fill in their profile with more then just a name.
Not everyone has time to click blind and you could be losing many comment opportunities on your blog….not to mention readers in general.

Hey, no I didn’t know that. I’m pretty sure every registrar I’ve ever used has been pretty vocal about their “no refunds” policy - I guess I’d just assumed that applies across the board. I’ll definitely keep it in mind, cos I use Godaddy a lot. Thanks for the tip.

Depend upon the policy what they do maintain to refund domian names.

Hey Rodney, that’s what I thought. Hopefully someone will come along with others as well.
I personally only use Godaddy, so I’m happy with it.

Really I never knew it, and also, this is not useful for me right now… Let me see if I step into flipping, but never with MFA

I recently found that out when I was registering a domain, and accidentally misspelled it. I don’t know how I did it, considering I look at everything five or six times before sending, but this time it slipped by me. The hosting company issued me a refund and then I registered the correct spelling of a name. It’s good advice for those who buy a domain and then can’t think of what to do with it later.

Pavan - You never know when you may need it and now you know! I haven’t wanted to do any MFA site either, but who knows what the future holds.
Welcome to the community! I hope to see you more.
November 12th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Hey Kristi, you’re definitely not alone in those slips! It’s just good that you noticed it before storing the name away for later use.
As a side note though, I do strongly advise against buying your domains at the same place you host.
November 13th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
This thing is new to me. If you don’t need it then you can bring it back and get a refund? Interesting. And it was really good that you can think of for 5 days. Thanks for the post. Keep us updated.
Thank you

Hi Diana, I love finding little tips like this. You never really know what will help someone out in a pinch.
Five days is pretty sweet indeed; I will research other registrars as well if no one else comes along with the info.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:03 am
Hi guys,
Thanks for discussing about that topic. I am using godaddy for registering my domains. Since I have no idea about other registrants.
Sure I will be once again here if I find that registrant.

Visiting initially from Commentluv but will be back to check out your site in more detail. I have to change my web hosting service at the end of May and want a reliable service but one that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg. Any suggestions?

Hey Larry, welcome to the community!
Who are you switching from? The only host I use and ever recommend is Hostgator
Awesome packages and prices (under $10 per month unless you go for a reseller or dedicated account), and the service and support is unmatched…..email, phone and live chat.
If you have any questions after roaming the site, feel free to ask…you can contact me directly as well through my form.
Side note: you do nit want to purchase domain names through them…I only recommend Godaddy for that.

this is a “shady” business model, also called “domain tasting”, has been implemented long time ago by even a big registrar.
search around for this issue

Acakadut - That is a shady practice, yes to a point and I’m in no way condoning it. I should have actually added that.
My reasoning was just if you goofed up the domain, or found a better one (as in my case), and things like that.
