Why Are You In Business: Security Or Hobby?

Just today a thread was started on a forum I frequent and it is indeed a very good thinking question. The question was…
“How many of you are doing your home-based business to gain financial freedom (i.e. get out of debt, secure your financial future, etc) versus just as a hobby or for fun?”
The responses vary of course, but the overwhelming one is usually that it starts as a hobby (something their passionate about) and just keeps on growing until they see the financial light ahead.
If this happens, then great! My response however was for those…oh so many…that just have no clue…
“It is indeed an intriguing question. I think if more people would answer it honestly (to themselves first) they would be a lot better off.
Far too often you hear complaints (whines, screams, plea’s, etc), from those that “aren’t going anywhere”. 9 x outa 10, they aren’t taking things serious enough.
Stop saying I can’t/I won’t. Step outa your comfort zone once in a while. CRACK OPEN THE PURSE/WALLET IF YOU NEED TO :-), but be smart about it is all.
If it truly isn’t a hobby, do what ya gotta do. If it is a hobby, that’s great too! Just be honest with yourself up-front.”
I think this question is much more suited to online then off, as there is so much more to take advantage of in running a business.
What do you think? Where do you fit in the question?
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
You talked about those who start a hobby site for just that, a hobby (many of those out there)… and those that start a hobby site that becomes a $$$ thing (less, but still quite a few)…
I believe many try and start a site for financial gain and soon realize that, hey, this isn’t as easy as it looks or as it is often “sold” and you must show a lot of dedication and hard work… and we both know what that means (a lot less, period).
Regards, Pete
p.s. I like the new look and feel… keep up the “Hard Work” !

I want it to be more than a hobby! I want the security. But it’s effectively a hobby since I am not making money at it yet. Challenging question there.

I’m very sorry for the delayed response, I normally reply ASAP. Your comment and 8 others were accidentally caught in the spam filter and I just noticed them. This rarely happens.
Very well put Pete. Far too many have dollar signs in their eyes thinking it will only be a few weeks.
They quickly learn this isn’t so. It is indeed hard work with a serious commitment.

Luke, I see a serious flaw here. You want it to be more then a hobby, you want the security and so forth, but if you keep calling it a hobby or treating it like a hobby because there’s no money yet, there’s a good chance there won’t be.
The most serious part is in the beginning, not after you’ve “made it”.

You’re absolutely right, Dennis. I need to quit calling it a hobby and seriously work it like a business.

I suggest alternative motive other than hobby. It’s lifestyle. As i am running my business, I do it because I love to live the way I want, not the way other people want. At a glance, it seems like a selfish motive. However, we should realize that doing business is about making ourselves useful to others; it’s about providing benefit. It’s more than a hobby; it should be a heart’s call. Besides, a hobby is actually doing something we like and require us to spend money for it. While business is producing money out of something we love to do
