Guest Post: DaBlogger Tells His Experiences with Social Bookmarking
The following guest post is from Andy, who writes for and manages DaBlogger.com. What I like most is the fact that he writes it all from Personal Experience as you will see. This is after all, the best way to write an article when applicable
.
In the past few years, I have watched many social bookmarking sites grow and have huge effects on the internet. Many people don’t realize that they can use these sites to promote their own sites and get vast returns. Below are benefits that I have seen these sites have on other websites.
#1 - Instant Traffic
Social bookmarking sites can give your site an instant traffic boost. Getting one link of homepages of digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us or any other bookmarking site can give me huge traffic boosts.
Most traffic will be targeted since your post will be under specific categories and you can attach keywords to your posts.
Not only will you get an increase in traffic but you will also see an increase in RSS subscribers, email subscribers, and members to your site.
I have seen a single submission to StumbleUpon bring an increase of 200% or more.
#2 – Attracts Search Engine Bots
Submitting articles/posts to social bookmarking networks is the fastest way to get your site crawled and indexed by search engines. Search engines frequently scan these sites and will pick up any new content/links that were posted.
I have submitted articles/posts to digg.com and found my site indexed within 12 hours.
#3 – Increased Links Back To Your Site
If you provide quality content to social bookmarking sites then other websites will link back to your site. Links back to your site will not only bring in traffic but also help with SERP.
I submitted one article to digg.com and within hours it was on StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, and reddit.com which provided me some quality backlinks.
#4 – Site Reputation
If social bookmarking sites are used properly, your site has the potential of becoming a trusted resource, making you an expert in your niche.
Social bookmarking does take a lot of time and energy but if done right, you can see huge benefits to your websites.

I have great results using Stumbleupon. You can read more about it(and learn a few grey-hat tricks) on my blog.

Social Network sites can be beneficial, but you need to use them correctly. Don’t just sit around digging and stumbling your own articles get out there and make friends and stumble their articles as well. If you don’t you will quickly get the reputation of just being a spammer that does nothing but promotes their own content.

Thanks Andrei but I’ll leave most of that to others, I’m as white-hat as they come
October 15th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Exactly right Adam, I couldn’t say it better myself.
With some networks you may not even have time to look bad in others eyes if the network bans you first.
October 15th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I agree with Adam,
If you’re going to use social bookmark sites make sure to do it correctly.

Well, I don’t use social sites that very much in my promotional strategy. That said, the only benefit I can derive from whenever someone stumble my article is the increase in my alexa ranking which is now below 100K but then I’m not too sure if alexa ranking is of any use for me in general.

Yan - you don’t see a visible increase in visitors?

Well social bookmarking sites are quickly indexed by Google and other search engines and they provide backlinks back to your site. This helps to provide faster indexing but like Adam said make sure you do it correctly

Oh yes, it does but they are the ones who don’t stay too long so it’s pretty much a case of “touch and go”. I don’t really really rely too much of it but I can’t stop my readers stumbling my article anyway….
Besides, the sudden spike inn traffic causes some issues on my hosting recently to the point of mine being deactivated for exceeding too much beyond the allocated bandwidth.

Salwa - yes indeed, they probably crawl multiple times per day.
October 15th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Yan - a very good point that I’ve only heard from a handful of others.
If you’re deeply into social media, definitely consider a better hosting package.

Social Media is the New age marketing… Sooner Twitter will be able to overtake social media websites as the number 1 marketing tool
October 16th, 2008 at 2:51 am
It’s definitely more widely used then some

This is really good to hear… I am in the process of embarking on my own social bookmarking journey… I’ll report my own results.

I look forward to it David. When you’re ready, feel free to leave your experiences and favorite social sites on this post…

The trouble with sites such as stumbleupon is that they tend to increase your bounce rate as most stumblers and such just bounce on by.

True, but that’s where superb content comes into play…give a reason to stick around!
October 16th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Stumble Upon definitely brings in a significant amount of traffic. I think a lot of it depends who makes the submission on some networks, and how much influence they have. If someone with a lot of influence shares your link, you will be back linked by those readers because they are pretty certain it is a quality article.

Kikolani - yes I am hearing this a lot now also. Those either big in a field or big on a particular site or both have a lot of power behind their submissions…I hear some even charge to do it.
I’d like to study the ethics on that one though…
October 16th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I have heard about the ones that charge too. I’m not sure if those people have a lot of influence, or just a bigger list of contacts to spread links to. I was just thinking in terms of a top blogger suggesting a post on blogging tips would be more likely to gain attention than others submitting it.

I did check who stumbled it and he only had two fans and so his influence would not necessarily be the factor. Perhaps it had more to do with the timing?
Sire´s last blog post..Is Timing Of the Essence In Regards To Blog Posts?
October 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Kristi - Absolutely, you have me submit and lets say DoshDosh submit…..well I would be deflated rather fast to say the least LOL
October 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Sire - I’m not sure which post your referring to, but in general I’d say yes, timing probably does filter in in some cases…more people on looking to stumble, and so forth.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Nicely written. I have to say, though, that the only social networking site that’s given me anything thus far is Twitter, and basically I’m doing all the work in posting my own link there. I’m signed up with Technorati and Delicious, and I post most of my articles on Delicious, but I don’t think anyone else has ever pinged it, or whatever term they use, so I’m probably not getting any bounce off it.
Mitch´s last blog post..What Will You Do To Get More Traffic?
October 16th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Mitch - I feel your pain, it took me a long time to figure it out aqnd I’m still figuring most of it.
The key as I’m sure you know is to just get yourself out there, everywhere, in front of as many eyes as possible (while not spreading too thin too soon).
You do want others to tweet, stumble, bookmark (whatever) your work…so start by doing the same for others and let them take notice.
See a good post? Stumble it, bookmark it and so forth. These people in turn will start to notice you, and if they like what they see (most) will follow suit…..
and so it begins
Make sense?

There’s a free website tool that helps you track how you are doing across the social web (blogs, etc.) vs. your competitors.
It’s a competitive website grader at http://www.reviewmyweb.com
Hope it’s usefull!

Hey thanks Sam, I’ll have to check that out
October 17th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Hey Dennis,
What do you think about using services like Onlywire or The Socializer? Have you use them? What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.
October 17th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Dennis,
BTW, I am not sure if I can put my tag on my posts. If not, I apologize in advance… Please let me know…
David
October 17th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
David - excellent question. I just recently learned of Onlywire myself and haven’t fully had the chance to examine it.
Generally speaking though, I think programs like that can be a fantastic time saver and do a person really well…..AS LONG AS they are used properly and not in a spammy fashion.
Programs like that have proven 10fold in the past to make it way to easy to just saturate sites with crap all over the net, effectively ruining them for legit users.
I have not personally used one myself as of yet, but plan too. I’d like to find one or two that offer the automation, BUT with a human factor as well…..which I do believe Onlywire is.
October 17th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Signatures - first off, thank you for asking I appreciate that. It’s something I’m currently battling with, but don’t allow it at the present time.
Personally speaking, I wouldn’t mind offering the option to regular readers/commenters (as you are becoming) as another form of thanks.
However, other will inevitably see it, not even question it, and before long this blog will be a link farm.
I’m thinking of adding it to my comment policy as a perk, but then again no one reads them LOL.
I’m workin’ on it so stay tuned!
