How To: 100 Blog Subscribers In Two Months - Listen Closely ;)
What?!?! You’re not interested in $100 CASH or a TON of prizes??
OK today’s post is not JUST a brag post about reaching the 200 mark (small dance, woohoo!) but a lesson for all, including myself.
You may recall the happy dance we did together when I hit the 100 subscriber mark on November 5th 2008. This post may be a wee late, but I first noticed 202 subscribers on January 7th, this year.
If you really want to break it down, that’s approximately 12 subs per week…not to shabby, eh? Although I never really looked that closely. What’s my secret formula? Well, unless you live in a bubble I really shouldn’t have to tell you, but I will
.
Blog Commenting has been my sole promotional tactic for a while now. It’s in italics because you NEVER comment purely for promotional purposes (some start to wonder). I ALWAYS try as I may to leave useful comments. I’ve been thanked more then once for starting conversations, giving inspirational ideas and so on, through my comments.
However, blog commenting is merely step one, and frankly useless without completing the formula in it’s entirety. Here’s how it goes purely off my own experiences…
1. Blog Commenting brings them in. It’s really not that difficult to leave a comment that makes readers, including the blog owner, WANT to visit your blog to see other insightful things you have to say.
Solid Tip: Commenting on CommentLuv enabled blogs with a good title enhances your chances 100fold.
2. Responding to Comments keeps them around. Read the post and the 90+comments that follow.
For the purpose of this lesson though, I’m not just referring to comments left on your own blog. Whenever you leave your awesome comment on another blog, you must tick the “subscribe to comments” box. If the blogger doesn’t have one, request it. Replying to those that reply to you on another blog is just as important…assuming you do want them to visit you.
There are two reasons why I personally see people not subscribing to comments, and no “too much email” is not a legitimate excuse if you’re serious about things. Sorry.
A. They think their comment is the end-all be-all and don’t really care what others have to say.
B. They know before hitting submit that their backlink seeking comment is crap, and don’t expect replies…nor want one.
3. High quality (original) content gets you the subscription. Duh! But you know it has to be said. Once you reel them in and they stick around a bit, they WILL browse your other content…THIS is what nabs you the subscription in the end.
Please note, this is not just another blog commenting article…it’s a basic yet crucial 3-step how to for gaining blog subscribers VIA blog commenting. (Read my title again
.)
Btw, nearly half are email subscribers, hardly any of which (if any) did it in sole response to my permanent backlink offer. That really means something cool in my eyes.
I await your thoughts and opinions as always
,
Dennis

For those wondering why I haven’t gone through my list manually and added all email subscribers to the subscriber page - it’s a ton of work contacting everyone and I will get to it eventually.
However, all email subs got the notification when I posted about it several times.

Great tips Dennis and thanks for the link love. These are some great tips to follow, and I’m sure your great comments everywhere are greatly contributing to your success. You make people want to subscribe even if they don’t like your blog, purely because of how much you contribute, to so many sites. Keep it up man, and congrats on 200 subscribers.

LOL as much of an ego boost as that might be, definitely not a recommended reason if one is looking to earn money from their blog.

Yep this is great (*free*) promotion method.
Reeling them in is easy, keeping them around by subscription is not.
How about offering an “eye opening” product in return to a subscription?

@Alex at Net-Entrepreneur.com,
Freebies for subscriptions tend to work very well, as long as it’s relatable and not super duper easy to access elsewhere. Your own product of course is best if applicable.
Relatable can be a little tricky sometimes, depending on your niche, and may take some thought. A prime example:
I recently had this discussion with a woman who runs a web/blog design blog; a really good blog in it’s own right. She was wondering why her free ebook on blogging tips only brought in 12 subscribers in something like 3 months.
i asked her why she didn’t offer a good freebie on blog design rather then “blogging tips”.
See it? The difference is subtle but definitely there and readers notice.
It’s definitely worth a shot if you have good ideas.

What do you mean, “..’too much email’ is not a legitimate excuse?” Imagine being one of the first few commenters on a ProBlogger pillar post. It would be difficult to sort through the comments on that one post, not to mention all the others, if you are consistent about commenting.
Could you describe the system that you use to sort through all the replies? Do you have a special email just for comment replies?

@Don Wilson,
First - Welcome to the community! I love seeing new “faces”.
Second - Darn good question, thank you. This one actually gets two answers…
1. If you’re commenting correctly (looking for feedback, visitors, and so on); “guru blogs” are the absolute worst places to do so.
A. 9 out of 10 guru blog owners will not respond, much less return visit.
B. 9 out of 10 of the other commenters won’t either. They are there to kiss the bloggers hind-end in hopes that he/she will respond and make their day. (See A.)
2. Now referring to large comment counts in general (non “guru” blogs DO get them), no I do not use a separate email, but some do find that best…personal preference.
Here’s what I can guarantee though - once commenting becomes a habit, three things will speed up drastically for you…
Article reading.
Comment writing.
Comment skimming in emails. (Actually all email skimming, which is sweet.)
Trust me, I PANICKED when I first started getting 2-300 emails (to start) in my morning download. Now it’s firmly in place in my “schedule” and takes, ohhhhh 30 mins? MAX. And that’s all emails, not just comment replies.

Let me put a spin this…
“I get a ton of traffic from comments on gurus sites, somewhere in the neighborhood of 50% of my traffic comes from guru blog comments”

I might be jumping into a conclusion here. Does the traffic convert into subscribers? If they do, that’s awesome. Imagine the possibility if the traffic comes from small-size blogs, your subs count will explode.
That’s just my theory. What has worked for me might not work for others - I presume (Dennis, please allow me to make one more assumption, will you? ;-))

@Dennis Edell,
I do have a few keyword advantages but unfortunately I do not write about adsense as much as people would like. The blog started as a personal journey blog (which was started prior to the overload of personal journey blogs) and people really enjoyed my style of telling a story and my honesty in my earnings disclosures.
Unfortunately with a name like Living on Adsense people expect to find a ton of Adsense advice. I have advice but it is peppered through the blog. This is why my subscriber count struggle. People come looking for content that is 100% Adsense advice, and then the find a story like blog ( much in the style of the book ‘The Wealthy Barber) and just read a bit and don’t subscribe. Because of this factor I plan on going through a bit of a re-brand for my site to more accurately portray what I blog about.
As for consistency, I manage a post a week which I think is fine. I admit I had a bit of inconsistent posting over the last few months, but alas I had a wedding and a honeymoon which kind of cut into my blogging time.
Personally I think a post a week is acceptable. I am curious to know what peoples thoughts are on a single post a week frequency or if people expect more?

@Commentluv,
I have focused most of my efforts on small sized blogs, but I as I mentioned to the reply to Dennis, people are expecting a lot of advice on adsense, and I focus more on a story telling style. I get a ton of emails asking about where the adsense advice is. I understand this is entirely my fault I mean, I really punched myself right in the Niche. this is why I am refocusing my efforts to recreate my blog and focus on making it focus on telling my story showcasesing my unique personal style, and making sure that it is clear what the blog is about as to not create any false expectations.
Dennie CommentLuv, thanks for the feedback!

You have either got it or you don’t and you have it in spades, your hard work is testament to your success, as for not touching Guru blogs i have to disagree, as long as you leave a belter of a comment then you will reap the benefit.
I like to comment on what grabs my attention and it could be the little guy or the big guru, but I can see that commenting on lesser known blog has its advantages to.
On the subscribe to comments issue, I always do until the thread burns out.

January 14th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
I agree 100%. Since I started commenting (properly) I have had great success, especially since I returned comments and came back to add more if needed.
I do a lot of travelling to comments on lots of blogs, mainly due to having a google alert for the word “commentluv” and I have noticed that there are little circles of commenters and it’s these that are the bread and butter of a blog but, given enough time, attrition will take place so it’s important to spread yourself out a little wider by seeking out new places to haunt for a while.
Once you get ‘out there’ and making good, worthwhile comments then you can be sure that it will generate some return traffic and, as you experienced, increased subscribers.
dammit, I do this so often, make a comment and it turns into a blog post on it’s own! now, shall I delete all this and keep it for blog fodder?.. nahh, I’ll just click submit

Hey Dennis, congrats on reaching the two hundy mark. I myself have only just hit 70 and my blog has been around since Dec 07. This leads me to another point that should be included within your topic:
Consistency.
When you start commenting on other blogs you really need to be consistent. You need to make reading and commenting a habit much like eating or brushing your teeth. I have always been hit and miss which means I have had really troubles increasing the number of readers to my blog.
Another point is consistency in updating your blog. Over the past year I have seen my numbers really fluctuate, I am pretty sure that if I kept all of my readers I would be near the 500 mark, but I keep being flaky and not update as often as I should, or not as consistently. I think having a blogging schedule can really help out getting those subscriber numbers up.

Could we dig a little deeper, though, into the subject of commenting on posts of super gurus? What about getting in as the first 2-3 commenters? I was of the opinion that lots of people will look through the first few comments before skipping through to the bottom (for the reason you identified - they just want to kiss-up to the guru). I’ve even seen software that will alert you of new posts so you have the opportunity to jump in and comment quickly.

Nicely written, Dennis, but I have to start off with a question; how do I determine whether someone’s subscribing to the email feed or the regular RSS feed?
Second, that’s wonderful growth in your blog for just over a month’s worth of work. And you didn’t overly bombard the market, like I do, with posts. Then again, your strongest suit has always been the commenting on other blogs, so there’s no one more qualified to write about it than you. I can’t believe how many blogs I visit for the first time and see that you’ve been there; just amazing.

Typically newer sites may install these plugins and be more willing/open to start networking, which could possibly build more channels or open up an opportunity for traffic. Many webmasters are looking for commentluv and keywordluv sites, of couse..those that have dofollow.

Hey Dennis!
Nice post and of course congrats on reaching the 200
Now, there is one thing you say that I really don´t agree with:
“There are two reasons why I personally see people not subscribing to comments, and no “too much email” is not a legitimate excuse if you’re serious about things. Sorry.”
I do feel that “too much email” is a legitimate excuse. You see, there are more ways to keep track of the blogs you comment on and just having a look at the number of comments here on one blog, one post …. 63 responses so far. I did sign up for one of your posts and after 2 days I unsubscribed.
For me, receiving 20-50 or whatever number of emails per post i commented on per blog is too much. say i comment on 3 posts, on 10 different blogs, i would receive 600- 1500 emails, just to notify me that there was another comment made.
This is not laziness, it is just finding a way that does work for me, without having me go through posts for hours and spending a large part of my time on surfing blogs.
I have put the blogs that I do comment on frequently in a firefox addon, called Morning Coffee. This allows me to build several maps of websites that I scan/comment on/need to check or whatever. by clicking one button they will open in different tabs, so that allows me to have a quick scan and see if there is a need to comment back on whatever I had said and was responded too.
No more follow comments via email for me, because I am using excuse number 3:
I have found a faster and more proficient way that works for me without exhausting my inbox
cheers

@Mirjam, thanks for the kudos!
OK true, as I replied to Don (#4), some have other systems set up - a separate email, the addon you mentioned or whatever. Basically as long as you “subscribe to comments” somehow, you’re good.
Not responding to people that reply to you is bad news.
As I said to Don though, I am really glad now that I did stick with the email. It made me super fast in several ways while still remaining accurate.
“you” in this comment is meant generally, not YOU in particular.

Dennis,
Congrats on your 200 subscribers. But I think today the number being shown by feedburner is the lowest I’ve ever seen. Any idea what could have happened.

@passive income ideas, it’s a very common feedburner glitch. Sometimes it’s small, others large.

I think the wisest thing here is to try to initiate thoughtful, provocative conversations through your comment(s), to try to ADD something to the discussion whenever possible. and yes — getting involved in the conversation you start, by ticking the box and doing your part to respond to your responses, seems smart.

@Matty Byloos, absolutely. You don’t want someone responding to your response with a follow up question and not be there to answer it.
