Knowledge Link Love #1: What Are Your Favorite Social Networks and Why?
Here it is! The first round of Knowledge Link Love (if you’re new here, click for info). This first one should prove quite beneficial for all involved, you, myself and especially any and all beginners following it.
It can’t be denied, Social Networking/Marketing is the hottest thing practically since the net itself was invented.
The “problem” now is, it has become soooo popular that there are just tooooo many social sites…..hundreds, with more and more being created every week.
See if this sounds a little familiar - You sign up for each and everyone as soon as they come out, with the best intentions in mind of course.
Now it’s 6+ months later, you have your name on 30 or so profiles and NOT MUCH ELSE. Some are partially filled out, maybe an avatar and a couple lines for a bio…maybe you even found a friend or 2…
Most however are just sitting there untouched and unloved like the proverbial red-headed step-child. The madness must end!!
Anyhoo, this can be very distressing to the beginner…..considering how distressing it can be to some of us *not so beginner* eh?
How many are there? What’s a good number to sign up with? Which are best for this or that? What Which Why Huh Aacccckkkk!!!!!
If I can be serious here (let’s see) I’m REALLY thnking about shutting down - closing out - DELETING - ALL of my social profiles…..gone.
That’s right, every itty bitty one of them! That is until, I can get to where I can open one at a time…1 by 1 the right way…think it can be done? We may find out. Heh.
As I stated in the beginning of this post, this is how this KLL #1 is most beneficial to ME and all BEGINNERS…I want all the ins & outs on the favorite social sites that you are ACTIVE on (that’s obviously important).
How this one is quite beneficial yo YOU is BIG TIME. After you comment is complete (not within it) you may list the links to whatever social sites you discuss.
How’s that for even MORE love!
I beg of you though, make it as neat as possible with HTML. For those that may not know the code yet, just copy & paste the following and insert your details…
<a href=”http://www.ridiculouslylonglink.com”><strong>This Is The Anchor Text</strong></a>
This will also bold your link automatically.
So here is your first Knowledge Link Love. The follow-up post announcing al the participants (as I wrote in the first post) will be in one week….be sure to tell all your friends and neighbors
What Are Your Favorite Social Networks and Why?
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

Hey Dennis!
First off all, I would like to say that you have a very good idea in spreading the link love.
And regarding the post: I know you visited my site and maybe found out a few things about me. I use Flickr to share with the world pictures of me. Twitter to let my followers know what I am doing, where I am, with who I am and other more personal or small things that my readers may wanna know about me. I use Stumbleupon because I needed the account. That’s right. I NEEDED the account. For me Stumbleupon is just a source of free traffic (visit my site and find out more about what I’m talking), who I feel in love with and continued to use. And to centralize it all I use MyBlogLog, that let’s my friends know if I twitted, posted a new picture on Fliker or Stumbled on an interesting site.
To much? Not at all - because you can see them all integrated in my site. I currently try to build a solid profile on every one of them and I really enjoy the process.
Because, after all, it’s about having fun also.
Feel free to ask me a question and if I can, I will respond asap!

Hey Andrei, thanks for the info! I’ll definitely look more into your blog.
As it says at the bottom of the post, you’re free to include the links to the sites you’re active on.
Feel free to comment again with them if you wish or email them to me and I’ll edit your original comment

I have to say that Stumble is great for traffic, with millions of members you can’t go wrong. Then there is My BlogLog that brings a lot of traffic to my blogs. On facebook I have a lot of friends, not sure where it all leads, but have gotten some traffic from there as well as some information from fellow marketers. Twitter I use occasionally and auto update with plug-in my posts.
These are probably the ones I am most active on.
Here are my links:

Also send me your twitter link and I’ll pop it in there for ya

Sometimes I envy my daughter who is a die hard MySpace fan. In her eyes nothing else can compare although I did presuade her to join FaceBook . She doesn’t experience social networking burnout the way I do. It’s all about MySpace and rarely FaceBook.
In the past three months I kind of started over. I decided to make a list of the social networks I belong to and refrain myself from joining any news ones (but I have…grrrr) I’m now in the process of concentrating on the ones I like most.
I decided it was in my best interest to concentrate on setting up my profile as a website vs a profile page. I have found the switch over to be rewarding. More people visit my profile on a daily basis and commenting on my page. Since my favorite social networks allow me to earn 100% on Google Adsense, AdBrite, Yahoo, etc ads on my profile, adding content instead of widgets, videos and audio has definitely increased my earnings.
My goal of course is to continue to tweak my profile page with tons of information for the social networking fanatics. My next step would be to increase visits to my profile outside the network.
Cool blog! I’m on my way to subscribe.

sadly im not on twitter (maybe i should sign up) but in terms of leveraging social networks, i use sites like squidoo, hubpages, weebly, EZA etc. in a nutshell, on a blog that you really want to promote, you write two similiar posts, one for your blog, the other to be used on the above social sites. except for EZA these have revenue sharing potential as well, 60/40 in some cases so its a win/win, we get traffic, and we sometimes get money as well.. just imagine if this was done for every post you made on your blog, how much extra traffic you could get, not to mention that places like squidoo take hte nofollow off after a few days meaning you are going to have some good authority backlinks as well.. actually i’ll write about this in detail soon..

Seriously, I use BlogCatalog because of the broadcast functionality…nuff said!

Dennis,
I am exactly like you I signed up for them all and let the die with improper use. I am not going to be deleting any of my entries, but hopefully be bringing each one up to speed one at a time in order to get back into the game.
Right now I am focusing on entrecard to bring new eyes to the site and making new friends. It worked well as one of my best participants came from Entrecard.
I also have been feeling the love for technorati and am trying to make friends there. So if anyone would like to become my friend on techonorati please feel free to join me by clicking here.
Linked In will probably be my next stop then on to facebook.
Thanks for this opportunity Dennis it is really a unique idea and cool way of getting comments and sharing luv.

Not all of us use the potential of social networks but they are great for traffic
October 7th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
They really don’t provide great traffic unless you they are truly people you talk to on a regular basis. I mean most people come and read one article that they find interesting and then go right back to the social network because that is what they were doing. They weren’t out looking for new blogs to read.

Kahthan - some awesome ideas there, I’ll be looking forward to the detailed post for sure.
Feel free to give me your links to the above sites, I’ll pop them into your comment
October 7th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Sorry Ben, which one now. MyBlogLog? LOL
Please do be careful not to overuse the broadcast feature, I stopped paying attention to many as it just becomes another form of spam.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Thanks Adam and you’re welcome
As for deleting, I’ve been thinking a bit more. I probably won’t actually delte all the profiles….instead I’l most likely delete the links from my sidebar and replace THEM one by one as I finish each.
Much better idea, yes?
Regarding EC, I’ve never really looked at it from a direct traffic standpoint…..right from the get go it has been an UNBELIEVABLE networking and blog finding tool
October 7th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
@ZK & Adam - some are some aren’t as far as *direct* traffic is concerned…that all depends on how viral a certain article is.
Again though, if you network well (which is afterall the defining purpose of social media) then you are golden! even if it is indirectly and might take some time.
October 7th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Dennis,
Great post and some good points made. I’m all about the link love and to answer your question of what my favorite social networks are, I’d still have to say Myspace (because I’m a music producer by trade) and StumbleUpon for it’s sheer traffic funneling. I don’t bother joining a social networking/bookmarking site in the first place if I know that I’m not going to use it.
The only ones I sign up to are the most popular and essential in my opinion, here they are…
Rajaie on Stumble Upon
Rajaie on Technorati
Rajaie on Twitter
Rajaie on Facebook
Rajaie on Digg
Yup
Feel free to add me, I accept everyone.
Do-Follow Blogs´s last blog post..Fame, Fortune, or Fun - Why Do You Blog?
October 8th, 2008 at 4:36 am
Hi Dennis,
To clarify, I submit my content to over 100 social sites, I use a service that does it for me and then some I submit to myself.
For me there is one main purpose from these sites, backlinks and traffic, if I was to seriously take the time to engage in these sites, I would need to clone myself 5 times. With all we have to do for Internet marketing, WTF has the time? Mostly the farthest I go is voting other articles, especially on Sphinn, since there are many I read due to them being all about IM.
Facebook makes it easier because the other people engage me and I go with that, but I spend minimal time there and have yet to see any true benefits, maybe because I am not using correctly, except getting other marketers to barage me with endless marketing material. Although, my oldest and closest high school friend found me there and that was COOL!
MyBlogLog I find other bloggers which, I am very interested in, and to get the most traffic from them it is necessary to explore and join other networks and I like to visit the people who visited me on my blog through them, have made good solid contacts that way.
My Twitter plug-in is: Twitter Tools @ http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress
works great!!
MY TWITTER PROFILE: http://twitter.com/imstrategies
Drop me yours and I’ll follow you as well!
BTW, the damn Comment Luv is doing the same here for me as it was doing for you on my blog, WTF is going on??? We need a new Blog Post plug-in!

Good points made here and to answer your question i am gonna have to say Stumble because it’s great for the traffic. Twitter to let my followers know what I am doing, where I am, etc. It is also a great tool for bringing in some juicy traffic.

Thanks for the links, I’ll check you out
October 8th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Hey JR, wow good info!
What service do you use?
I’m glad to hear you do vote on others. From what I understand it’s real bad in the end if you ONLY submit your own all over the place.
I like MBL for the same reasons…blog catalog too except for the inevitable MBL duplication factor.
My Twitter is http://twitter.com/Dennis_Edell though I haven’t really tweeted yet lol.
Some of my link are listed on the right sidebar but I think I will be removing most…replacing them as I actually get active in each one. That’s a lot simpler then actually deleting all my profiles.
Let me know your MBL and Facebook links as well.
As for CommentLuv - I understand it may keep getting worse until we upgrade to the latest version, which needs WP 2.6 or better.
If you already have upgraded yours, contact Andy with any issues.
LMAO@Clone - I so know what you mean!
BTW - You’re comments are still ending up in my filter. I know the extra links can do it, but as it is so far, it’s just yours….you may want to look into that
October 8th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Hey Salwa, do you “tweet” anything specific to bring the “juicy traffic”
Feel free to comment again with your Stumble and Twitter links, just remind me (and others) that you posted above
October 8th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I’ve been very active in social networking for several years, with varied results.
I was doing very well with MySpace and was meeting many friends I already knew and lots of new people along the way. Then, MySpace changed the rules and started redirecting external links to their home page. That’s when I moved to Facebook.
Lately, I haven’t had the time to really participate at Facebook, but I still like it. I’ll get back there soon.
I spend a lot of time on Squidoo. While, technically, it isn’t a social networking site, there are a lot of social networking features built in when you consider favoriting lenses and joining the fan club of your favorite lensmasters.
I created a Squidoo Marketing community on Ning.com to have a way to interact more with some of the best lensmasters I’ve met along the way.
I didn’t particularly like Twitter when I first encountered it, but now I’m hooked. I use Twitterific on my Mac to keep up with my friend’s tweets when I’m online and I use Twitter Tools to post my blog posts to Twitter.
Until today, it was also making a daily digest of tweets to my blog, and I finally decided I didn’t like that, so I turned it off. Now, only my blog posts will be tweeted and my tweets won’t be blogged.
I use MyBlogLog to centralize lots of my interactions online and am a member of BlogCatalog for similar reasons, although I’m much more active on MyBlogLog.
I’m a happy member of StumbleUpon, but I’ve been too busy lately to do much there. I’ll get back to it, because I like it.
I bookmark lots of pages on Delicious, but don’t do much interacting there.
I just discovered TagFoot and tend to like it better than Delicious, but I’ll be using both on a regular basis. In fact I’m going to tag this post on TagFoot.
I’m a member of Ryze and enjoy it, but I think the other sites are leaving Ryze behind because of its lack of new features, including the lack of RSS feeds, which I believe are necessary for effective social networking. I also lead the Social Networking Sites for Business community there.
I’m a member of LinkedIn, but it has never been a good fit for me. I just don’t feel comfortable using it and I think they throw up a lot of obstacles for their members compared to the other sites I prefer.

I’ve recently seen the power of stumbleupon - apparently my site was marked as an ‘unknown topic’ and in my site traffic soared 400% in one day.
I’m not sure if I’ve seen it mentioned, but rollyo is a different kind of social site. Very easy to set up and it showed up in my backlinks within just a day or two.

Andy - thanks for sharing! That’s amazing on the SU feat, congrats
I’ll definitely have to check out Rollyo also.

My top most frequently used social media would have to be StumbleUpon. It just keeps getting me free traffic in bulks. Who wouldn’t love free traffic right? I have even post this in DP forums which got quite a bit of attention in there.
I am currently building up on my Twitter profile as well. Honestly, I think this will be a fantastic marketing too as well. But more time need to be spend in Twitter compared to SU.
I have written a post on social media marketing in my blog and wish to share with Dennis community in here.
Cheers to all
