Hello all! If you’re a regular reader and especially if you have linked to any posts in the past, please read in its entirety and take the appropriate action. Thanks!
Due to my lazy - err - busyness in not posting one post, I’m now killing a couple birds here…
Regular readers, especially those of you that have been with me since the beginning may notice some weirdness afoot here on the blog. Notice the archives are a wee thin? October 2007 now no longer exists?
It may look odd for a while, feelings of deja-vu even. OK, Ill explain…..
I did start this blog and the whole idea behind it back in October, and oh boy was I ready to blog! POST POST POST! Was all I thought about…promotion be damned, just keep posting.
It don’t work very well that way does it. No.
All sorts of excellent articles, both that I wrote and those I found interesting around the ‘Net. Was anyone even reading them? Dunno as I had very few if any comments.
The problem…
As stated above, a deep lack of promotion. Not even CLOSE to where I’m at now, and it can only get better from here. So here’s what I’ve done…
I’ve removed over 40 posts that either had NO comments or 1-2 crap *spammy* type comments (back then I was so happy to get ANY comments, I was very lax in this area) and they will re-appear at different times from now on into the future.
Good articles…if I do say so myself lol, that I really feel never got a chance. Completely my fault, and I’m all over it now.
For those that have linked to certain posts here…and there are a few of you. Sorry but you have 2 reasons why you will need to re-link…..the moving of posts, and described above and I also changed my permalink structure (a couple weeks ago, sorry).
Sorry for the long post to tell something so simple, but if you really read it, there’s a real good lesson or 2 here for all that Blog.
Edited to add: The look of the posts on the front page will also start to look different very soon (starting this weekend). it all has to do with the best way I found to go FULL FEED, and STILL provide snippets on-site for the nice clean look. This will be in a future post.
To our mutual success!
Dennis

All the best with the new changes Dennis. Hope it does good to you. Only 2 out of 100 people viewing a post are considered potential commentators. So, don’t be de-motivated because of that fact.
Will be watching you…
Cheers!

Hi Nadeesha,
Thanks for the well wishes!
Although I feel 2 out of 100 is a wee low, you’re certainly right; not everyone is going to comment by a long shot (if those #’s were right, my unique’s would be A LOT higher for the past couple months).
It is a petty good indicator though, that not many may have seen the post…we shall see as I continue to step up the promotion
I hope I didn’t come across as some comment hog lol, I just want to be sure I’m reaching as many as possible…..it’s all about the *help* after all

Hey Dennis,
Good luck with the changes.
I would set up a redirect on those posts, maybe to this post in order to avoid broken links from google and other SE’s.
Cheers,
Alex

Hey Alex, thanks for the well wishes, it’s truly appreciated.
I assume you’re referring to my permalink restructuring. I’m not all too worried, I was warned in advance by another colleague that SE results would be real wonky until they crawled/indexed again.
Since it was a couple weeks ago or so, I’m Thinkin’ it has already started or will shortly…I can wait it out.

I know what you mean Dennis. I had to do redirects in order not to mess with backlinks but as my blog is rather new thare was just a few, not big deal.
I guess that having too much posts to redirect is better to do what you have done, with the added value of the re-birth of some good posts that wouldn’t see the light otherwise.
Good luck!

Anthony - exactly right, way to many to mess with in my eyes…that plus as you say the “re-birth” made extra bonuses

Hi Dennis
Thanks for the info - its a great idea - removing older posts on your blog and giving them new life - otherwise its a waste! I was actually also thinking about this issue tonight - as I have lots of older posts on my self help blog (like you, writing, writing - but no traffic/comments - and they are now hidden away in the archives of blogger).
Many of these posts are actually better than recent posts, but again, NO traffic. So I put some of them as links - as ‘recommended posts’ - and also thought about reposting them, now that I have a few readers - more coming I hope(!) - but then thought about duplicate content issue.
So - what a fantastic idea - I hope you don’t mind, but I think I will do similiar - and remove old posts - and repost them, with slight modifications - this will be especially useful when I move to my own wp blog!
I look forward to reading the posts, as I am a relatively new reader of your blog anyway - but a returning one
THANKS DENNIS
Warm Regards

Thanks for the kudos Megan!
I’d put the switch from blogger to WP as #1 on your to-do list…everything else will fall into place after that, as you will have much more flexibility for posts, pages and so forth.
I’ve never put much stock in the whole duplicate content debate for multiple reasons, but you may want to “update” old posts anyway….things change so rapidly that you may find things as you read through them before re-posting.
As for me minding, go for it! I was hoping this would give some the “aha!” moment
May 14th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Thanks Dennis!
- yes, it certainly was an ‘aha’ moment! I’d be interested to know more about your thoughts on the ‘multiple content’ issue too (btw - put a request for content in your voting widget)
Will take your advice re: WP as no. 1 priority. Bit of a learning curve, and am also doing a writing course (plus some writing for some websites, plr)
But have some good software (I hope) that allows you to create blog themes, like website creators do(rapidnichewebsites) - yet to try it, but features are fantastic and have heard nothing but good. (may do some ‘test’ ones first, especially with the upgrade to WP 2.5)
will be great to have the control in WP compared to blogger (even though blogger makes widgets, etc easy - not much flexibility). and all that ‘great’ (hee hee) content gets hidden away so easily.
I don’t think people take blogspots as seriously as WP blogs either, on their own domains. Not sure why.
And yes - thanks - willl certainly do a proper read of older posts before reposting - because I am also doing a rather significant change to the overall ‘theme/content’ of my self help blog - more focused and hopefully more valuable for people!
Enough ramblings!
Will read more of your other articles soon!
Warm Regards
Meg

Hiya Megan, you’re the 2nd vote on the widget?
Duplicate content - sure if it’s a WORD FOR WORD copy, then it should be banned…other then that, if DC was much of an issue then a couple hundred thousand news sites, article directories and blogs would not be indexed at all; KWIM?
WP does have a bit of a curve, but you can easily take it in steps and not get too overwhelmed.
What software package are you using? I may have an excellent recommendation for you. It’s what I used for quite some time when I first got started, and the only “create a blog” package I currently recommend.
Let me know what you’re using, I may want to take a look also. i have not upgraded to 2.5, nor do I plan too anytime soon.
Grab a “widget ready” WP theme and widgets are super easy.
Correct, “business people” do not take blogspot (or any of the free subdomain style blogs) seriously.
The main argument of all might be, “If he/she is not willing or able to spend 10 bucks a year for a domain and less then 10 per month for hosting, do I really wanna do business with them?”
Talk soon!
