So I’ve Started to Monetize - Link Love Style ;)
OK so it’s not FREE link love this time, but there’s plenty of time for that
you know I love to do it.
No no, now I’m talking about probably being the last blogger on the net to give a go to the scratch-back “top spots” link tipper dohickey (I think that’s the official name), which you can find on the left side bar.
How do I consider mine a wee different? I’ve seen them for $5 per day, which isn’t too too bad, and more often then not I see them for $5 while using the auto-bump feature…..
What this means is, your five dollar link is there only until the next person buys one. To me this is a double-edged sword for the buyer, and a little greedy on the bloggers end…sorry but it’s personal opinion.
My double-edged sword theory - perhaps if one had thousands of subscriber/readers then my link might have a chance…..on the other hand, that’s a whole lotta people that could bump my link right outa there real quick.
Nope, mine is a mere $5 per week. Not bad, yes? I figured this was a decent way to break slowly into the blog monetization world.
Before the questions come pouring in, here’s the answers…..
1. Sorry, these links do not pass juice. The widget is designed for all links to be no-follow in conjunction with Google’s web-master guidelines.
I do love you all, I really do; so please don’t take offense. It’s not worth a groin kick (on both sides) from the big G. LOL.
2.
I will NOT lengthen it past 10 links no matter how popular it gets. I’m not THAT greedy lol, and it gives more “show-time” to the 10 generous people.
3. For now link purchases are not set to auto-approve. I want to make sure that all links are “family friendly”. However, as my regular commenter’s can attest to, it does not take me long to respond
For now and the foreseeable future, this widget will be the only way I sell text links…..Price is good - Position is good - Easy as pie for y’all (click link and follow steps - paypal only) and no groin kick!
Can’t get much better then that, don’tcha think?
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

Good luck with (the dohickey) widget. I once had it on my blog, but didn’t like the overall look of it and so removed it.
There is nothing wrong with slowly but surely monetizing your blog. Don’t forget you can also go back to older posts and do some monetization there as well.
Keep on trucking. (or suv-ing, hy-briding, etc)

I couldn’t figure out if it was dohickey or doohickey…I hope to not run into legal issues.
As for monetizing older posts, you betcha! I remember every post, so if I’m ever promoting something and it fits, you bet I’ll back-track and plug it in…
Assuming affiliates is what you meant?

I hadn’t realized it was a nofollow program, so I just went to check Sire’s Wassup Blog, as he has it with a couple of people who’ve paid for his words, and you’re right; heck. I don’t know that he’s set a dollar amount, and if I ever add one I’m not sure I’ll add a dollar amount either, because whatever comes, well, that would be nice. I’m thinking, at least initially, it would look better having it filled with names. Good luck with it, and if it works, I’ll be adding one also.
October 19th, 2008 at 1:19 am
Hey Mitch, what do you mean? I don’t think you can’t set a dollar amount….free is not an option as far as I know, as they take a cut.
Oh now I see. No I think you have to set a dollar amount. You don’t have to display it like I do, but click one of his links and you’ll see.
“Good luck with it, and if it works, I’ll be adding one also.”
Thanks! Be a pioneer and set the trend! (Be the first buyer)
LOL

Hi Dennis, Thanks for the comment that you made in my blog.
About the dohicky widget, I’m not crazy about it too. But there’s no harm in trying

Hey Riyanne, you’re quite welcome. I’m also a subscriber
Nope , no harm. I’ll try it for a while. All parties are safe from Google and as I mentioned, I think I have a really good combo in regards to price & time.
If I may ask, what about it don’t you like?
October 19th, 2008 at 2:00 am
I’m wishing you luck for this idea and it seems you are not running out of ideas.
Cheers!
October 19th, 2008 at 2:04 am
Dennis, I did go back to his site, and looked for his original post announcing it, and I guess you do have to set some kind of amount, so he set his to $1, just to try to get people to participate. So, there you go.
Mitch´s last blog post..What Makes Twitter Interesting
October 19th, 2008 at 2:16 am
AC - I kept the comment merely out of curiosity at what you could possibly mean…
As one of my FIRST attempts to monetize, how could that be running out of ideas?
Believe me I have plenty. I’m just not stuffing my blog with more ads then info as a lot try to do.
October 19th, 2008 at 2:19 am
Mitch - he must be doing it for participation, which is an interesting concept.
With the company’s cut, he can’t actually be making much of anything..the creators themselves admit that freely and advise more then $1.
I thought their admission to that was an interesting marketing ploy as well. They advise $5 to $25, which sure ain’t gonna happen here
Not before I get to 100,000 uniques a week or so anyway
October 19th, 2008 at 2:31 am
First Dennis, re-read AC’s comment; he actually said something positive to you, just not the way we’re used to seeing it.
Second, yeah, Sire even admits that he just wants to see names on there to see if people would actually do it before he thought about actually using it to make better money. Overall, it’s a better program than the Buy Me A Beer program was.
Mitch´s last blog post..What Makes Twitter Interesting
October 19th, 2008 at 2:50 am
Mitch - perhaps the “keeping the comment” was a little harsh as I never delete comments, but I honestly don’t see it.
I’m quite curious to see what he meant, maybe I did miss something…if so I will certainly apologize for taking it the wrong way
As for sire, that makes sense. And actually a neat idea in it’s own way
October 19th, 2008 at 5:35 am
hmmm… you have a very nice website, I wish you the best of luck with the link sales on your sidebar.
Thanks for dropping a comment over at my blog, hope to see you again!

Congrats Dennis on starting monetization for your blog. Price is good, hope people will jump on opportunity.
Note: Why text on your blog all bold. Is it intended?
October 20th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Max - no actually it’s not, I just noticed that a day or so ago…I’m on it
October 21st, 2008 at 5:15 am
Max - fixed. I missed a closing tag in one of my top sidebar boxes and it filtered down.

Hey Dennis,
I had put up this widget before at my old blog theme but took it down as I had some loading problems not necessarily caused by this though but was removing some widgets to fix the problem. I didn’t know its no-follow. Good luck on this idea.

Hey Peter - Yep no follow covers all butts; it’s just not worth the risk now ya know?
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:45 pm
#1 makes it not as worthy
November 3rd, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Perhaps to some, but it is still a site wide link to pimp one’s wares.
What’s most unworthy is aggravating Google…
November 20th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Hi Dennis, that is a very interesting concept. I think
also, it would be nice to see some sort of traffic stats or PageRank for the curious lot. Not that it would really matter since they are no-follow links per Google. The traffic stats and/or pagerank would perhaps wet the appetite for some who may be on the fence.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Hey Nerdizen, welcome to the community!
Honestly I didn’t think I’d need all that just for the widget. It’s coming though, with a whole advertising page.
Thanks for the input!

You’re welcome Dennis. The challenge for anyone online who wishes to pursue their passion full-time, is to decide how to monetize their site without offending their visitors. This is a delicate balancing act at best, where great content is the fulcrum between increasing visitorship and rising revenue. Your passion for what you do shines through Dennis and your enthusiasm is unquestionable. I’m happy to be a member. Thanks!
November 23rd, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Wow Nerdizen, thanks for the awesome comment! It’s readers like you that enable bloggers like me, to keep on going.

If it makes you happy, different strokes …
I have started to use Trigget inline text links which are fairly unobtrusive; there is no floating bubble or double lines. It’s only been a couple of months since i started, still under review, but so far so good.
How well have you been doing with this method of link buying? I see you are fairly flexible with the links (Google reader!) but hey who cares as long as the link isn’t offensive.
December 6th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Bill - I never heard of Trigget, got a link? If they are paid do follow links, then never mind. I don’t mess with angering the Google gods unnecessarily. LOL
How well and I doing? did ya see my latest post?
We’ll shall see…
I don’t get why Google reader would not be a good link? It’s actually a very clever tactic. People can read the blog posts, and subscribe all in one!

Hey Jason, welcome to the community!
Google does crawl and index no follow links, they just don’t pass page-rank from one to another.
