How To: Evaluating Competition For New Site Niches

The following is a guest post by Donna Fontenot, better know as DazzlinDonna from seo-scoop. Pay attention boys and girls; if you’ve ever had a thousand ideas, but don’t know where to start (who hasn’t?), this is a good one ;) .

Those who know me well, know that I have new site ideas nearly every day. Although I don’t act upon every idea that floats through my head, I do act upon quite a few of them. Occasionally, I’ll start a new site just on a whim, but I at least “try” to be sensible about it before starting one. Essentially, the smart thing to do before I waste time starting a new site is to determine several things:

    1. Can the site make money - either while I own it or from selling the site later?

Niches - There’s More Then Enough To Go Around

Lynn Terry, recently wrote a fantastic little article on niche marketing, and why you should never give up the fight. Not only is it awesome as a standalone, but goes very well with our post on leveraging your competition.

When you’re through the article, be sure to follow the links to Lynn’s Blog and Forum, both highly recommended…

“Everyone is on the hunt for a great niche. This is one of the things that tends to stump people who are just getting started, and also the thing that long-term Internet marketers never stop looking for.

The initial response I generally hear is “They’re all taken!” or “There is too much competition!” or “How can I ever compete with what’s already out there?”…

The truth is it’s not that competitive at all. That’s a general statement of course, but its in reply to a general question. What I mean is that there are plenty of good niches left. Its just a matter of what you plan to offer… and how.
