Threaded Comments Have Arrived! Edit Comments Is Coming…
An important question awaits on EasyCashContests!
Now here’s a post MANY of you have been waiting for! As discussed before, I was waiting so patiently for WP 2.7 to arrive for it’s integrated threaded comment capability…so I wouldn’t have to add an unnecessary plugin.
However, due to personal preferences and paranoias I decided I will not be upgrading for a bit; so the search was on! A big thank you to John Collins from Affiliate Money Tips for turning me on to this Threaded Comments plugin.
It was a toss-up between this and Brians Threaded Comments, which appears to be the most popular. My main selling point for this one was no theme tweaking, just upload and activate. (Brians requires an upload of a new comments.php file which was not attractive to me.)
I haven’t fiddled with any of the really cool settings, features and options yet, but I wanted it announced ASAP! I know you’ve been patient
.
It’s also installed on my personal blog/hub. An Edit Comments plugin is coming soon.
Enjoy!
Dennis

Gosh, I didn’t know of any other threaded comments plugin apart from Brian’s. The latter took me 2 hours to get it right.
Now I’m not too sure if it works on Thesis theme. I guess I just need to give it a try.

I created a new blog through my host which already has 2.7, so when you create a new blog, you automatically will get 2.7 and although the kids like it. I dont.
I mean its not that i don’t like it, it has a series of neat features, but it is so RADICALLY different. Not to mention the write a new post area is so crammed in. Arggghh.
But on some of my blogs it still is not upgraded, so all is right with the world. lol.
Unfortunately we will all have to upgrade to 2.7 and jeez on the wp admin dashboard there is already talk of 2.8
I’m like c~mon enough with the never ending upgrades.

Also I’ve noticed that when a particular plugin won’t work with a comment’s theme, if I use Brian’s comment.php everything starts to work again, perhaps because his is more generic.

Hi Dennis -
I had been thinking about searching out a plugin to edit comments but it was even near the top of my to do list.
I first considered it when I got a comment from a product owner (Karl P). I prefer to look at it as he was just trying to get me to checkout his ebook about Squidoo. I had 2 other authors I had promoted at the bottom of my Squidoo articles. If I was going to add his I couldn’t very well publish his his comment because if I did the links he used would bypass my affiliate link. I just left his comment in moderation.
After I installed WP Ajax Edit Comments I was able to De-link his comment and publish it. I did this to use it to my benefit. I use Ninja Affiliate to insert my affiliate links and just used is site name in the body of the comment as a keyword redirect and made a link of it. So now I have my affiliate link for his ebook in his comment. However this is not what got me to search out a edit comments plugin.
It was another commentor George that left a comment that was almost not worth answering because he really didn’t give enough info to answer him. I checked out his url’s and at least they seemed legitimate except he left a letter out when he entered his url. That’s what got me to look for the comment editor. I wanted to put that letter into his url so it was functional.
You know it can be a real pain searching for a plugin on the WordPress.org site. It’s not uncommon to end up with 20 plus pages to search through and that’s if you’re checking one category or search result. But I always go through the whole list. I never know how to take it when I see the author says something that can be taken as a courtesy warning or may indicate a real problem with the plugin. I’ve seen quite a few of these. I now look at them as a courtesy because it would be easier for the author to say nothing.
This plugin has one of these warnings - “When using this plugin for the first time, please test out various characters. If there are any issues, please de-activate
the plugin immediately and file a support request”. This almost scared me off but I threw caution to the wind and gave it a try. I’ve had more problems come up with plugins that give no warning. Figures.
The WP Ajax Edit Comments plugin has some really cool features. This allows you to edit comments where in admin or right on the post page. It has a lot of options you can tweak for admin, registered users and regular visitors. It allows the commentor to edit their own comment if you allow it for a time period you set. I have mine set for 10 minutes. The default is 5. There is a countdown timer visible if you want.
For this function to work you must turn off moderation in your comments settings area. If you don’t the comment will be editable when you allow it to publish and your visitor will be long gone. As admin you can edit any comment any time with no time limits. You can edit everything which was what I wanted. The Name, eMail, Website and the Comment. The icons for the options include a text title. Admin gets - Edit, De-link, Moderate, Spam and Delete Options. The regular commentor sees an Edit icon and the time they have left to edit their comment. It’s easy to use and set up.
I really like this plugin but here’s what you need to know.
Requires WordPress Version: 2.5 or higher Compatible up to: 2.7 but in the readme there is a link for a stable version for WP versions 2.1 - 2.5
It’s designed to work with Akismet and Defensio for spam protection. I use Akismet. In the plugin settings you can tic Akismet, Defensio or none.

In regards to editing comments, the admin of a site can edit comments and do things like adjust URLs, add or remove links, and correct spelling whether you have a given plugin install or not. Simply go into the Wordpress dashboard, browse to the comment in question and choose the “edit” option.
Alternatively, you can modify the comment directly in the database without going to Wordpress if you desire, but you do have a greater risk of breaking something!
In my opinion, the plugin creators that give the warnings are the good ones because they are aware of certain issues with their plugin and are being upfront about problems it might cause rather than trying to hide it just to get you to use their plugin.

I’m pretty sure that’s what he means by that…this way if you make a typo, if you notice it in time you can correct it and not look like such an idiot (I’ve done this more than once)
I wonder though how that works in conjunction with subscribe to comments (does the subscription service wait until the editing time limit has passed?)

What happens is you enter your comment and click Submit. Your comment looks normal but there is an Edit Icon in the bottom area and right next to that is a countdown timer. The amount of time you are allowed to edit your comment can be set by the blog administrator. The WP Ajax Edit Comments plugin has a default of 5 minutes. I currently set mine to 10 minutes. I wanted to give enough time to the commentor to read threw a lengthy comment and have time to make correction without racing the clock.
When you click the Edit Icon an edit window appears with your comment in it and you can still see the countdown timer racing. When your complete your edit you just click Save and your done. If there is any time left on the timer the Edit Icon is still visible and functional. If you have time and wish to edit a second time you can.

Brian D. Hawkins´s last blog post..Methods of Blog Post Promotion

Nick Reply:

My answer would be no. Threaded comments just means that the comments appear nested below each other if the comment author uses the included “reply” link (like I have here) and makes it easier to follow the line of conversation. This is especially useful when several conversation threads get started in the comments to a single post (as often happens here at DSWM).
AJAX refers to scripting that can be used to enhance the display/interactivity of a site. For example, some sites use AJAX (I believe) to have the comments “slide” up and down when someone clicks to reply to a given comment. Many drop-down type menus that you see thoughout the internet run on AJAX as well.
Hope this helps clear that up for you!

The way Ajax works like with this plugin is it allows an exchange of information from your browser back to the server and back to your browser. It is just doing this for a small defined area within the web page like the area your comment is in. Ajax allows just your comment to be updated on the page without reloading the whole page making it faster and making the Ajaxed area seem interactive.
Using this plugin you can get a good feel for how it works. You see it using the editor. After an edit and save it shadows over the editor and has an activity bar then leads you to believe the update is occurring and then it disappears and there’s you edited comment with all the other comments. If you’re admin and you delete a comment the comment turns red and the comments below it slide up over the deleted comment until it’s completely covered. Like it wasn’t ever there.

I’m still using WP 2.6 as I prefer it having used the WP2.7 on my new blog. Also someone had lots of problem after upgrading and had to restore back to the old version (I think it’s JR) so I’m not too keen after hearing that.

Great addition to the website. I temporarily enabled threaded comments on mine, using the new 2.7 feature but have since turned it off… I think I will decide on one of these better threaded comments plugins.
The default feature doesn’t use the nice AJAX features of these plugins to nest the reply box after the comment that you’re replying to.
One suggestion: remove the post numbering. ie. due to nested comments, it only counts to 13, even though there are 27 (and counting) responses.

I agree that it might be a good idea to remove the numbering of the individual comments….In regards to the AJAX features, is all that fanciness really that necessary?
However, it probably wouldn’t be terribly difficult to integrate AJAX type features into the threaded comments embedded in Wordpress and might save the trouble of having additional plugins installed.

@Dennis Edell,
I kind of like the numbering. If you know your comment is number 14 and you’re notified of a reply it’s easy to locate. As are all the other top level comments. Easier to pick out the start point of each one if you’re quickly scrolling down the page.
At the top of the comments it says 80 Responses (at this moment) and I see by the mentioned numbering there is 19 comments. If the numbering was removed I’d have to do a manual count to see how many top level comments were actually made.

To back up the original comments.php file, just rename it to something like comments.php.original or something like that. Much easier than trying to store it somewhere, remember where it was stored or remember what it is or why you had it there when you happen across it one day. This way it is easily identified and is with the rest of your theme parts
