UPDATED - We Will Stay Do-Follow, But…
Lucias Linky Love is installed!
For those that have no clue what I’m talking about, please read the rest of the post and leave me your thoughts.
For everyone: No, I’m not going to tell you what the magic number is! Muahahahahahaha!! (But the highest number I could pick is 10)
If anyone thinks they have an issue here, please lt me know. ![]()
——————————–
Now I realize this post and especially that header comes completely out of the blue. The reason for that is it all came to me just a couple hours ago.
I read a post on thoushallblog in which Yan discusses a conversation he had with Garry Conn.
The part that really caught my attention was Garry’s take on the effects of do-follow/no-follow within Google… it went further then the usual yadda yadda you read on the subject ALL OVER THE NET. LOL
I started thinking of how I too am starting to slowly gain a little PR on inner pages (yay me!) and how I really don’t want to lose that.
However, I still want to give the luv to those awesome regular readers/commenters of mine (y’all know who y’ar
)
What to do, what to do…..
Aha! I’ve decided to switch-out my current do follow plugin for Lucias Linky Love.
For those that don’t know, this is the customized plugin that allows you to preset a number of comments (3-10) before the do follow turns on for a particular commenter.
Two birds-One stone….. Installing this will allow me too continue sharing the love with all you awesome regulars, while foiling the plans of those looking for the “one off” comment crap designed solely for a followed link-back.
No more juice for you evil beings, muahahahahahah!
I’m not sure what it will be set too, but I’m thinkin’ 10 for maximum effect; again regulars need not fret.
HINT: Be sure to tick the subscribe to comments box so you can also comment on other comments.
(There is another post coming dedicated solely to that plugin also…install now if you haven’t already.
)
Please keep in mind before commenting, anyone against this idea may be considered a link-whoring spammer by the others…..make your objection a good one. Hehe.
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

For some weird reason, I couldn’t get the Lucy’s Linky Love to work properly on my blog. Thing is whenever I activate the plugin, my adsense will just happily disappear out of the blue.
I hope anyone here can enlighten me with something. Is Lucy stealing my Adsense.

hey Dennis,
Good thing I stopped by. Being kinda new here, I better get another comment in!
When I saw your title, I was going to say don’t drop do-follow. I think it’s a good idea, and have it on my blog (but then I’m a new blogger that probably doesn’t know much).
I don’t think it causes much of a “PR” leak. From what I’ve read, only 15% of a page’s PR is available to go external, but then again, what do I know. I think Google has been reducing PR across the board, and I think it’s a bit overrated anyway.
All this said, I am interested in this plug in you mention, because from what I see, do-follow does increase comment spam, which I delete without hesitation. Anyway, the plug-in seems reasonable to me. What do you plan to set it at?

hey Dennis,
Just kidding. Anyway, my point is, what to do about subscribing to a post and then getting 50 emails because of it?
To add to my comment above (I forgot), I would “subscribe to comment” which I used to, but I was getting bombarded by emails on posts (like it looks like some of yours have the potential for, no offense) that get 50-70 comments (this was happening on two other blogs I read).
If you subscribe to more than a few of these monster-comment-generating-posts it can be overwhelming. That said, I’d like to know, if I don’t subscribe, when and what the blogger replies to my comment. I don’t know what the solution is. Maybe if you got less comments on your post?

I’ve heard of this too and I think it’s a great idea! Like you said … those who don’t … hmmmm … remember my comment pussy post?! LOL
I get bombarded with email from some of the posts I subscribe to … but I usually scan them and see if it I can learn from it … or if I’m overwhelmed I just delete and come back and read them all when I have time. *SmiLes* Suzanne

It’s a good thing you installed the application. I see people leaving very simple comment on the “do-follow” links and that sort of makes me irritated. I like to read what bloggers have to say and vent about. It’s interesting and sometimes it gives me time to think about the issues.

Hi Dennis,
I fully understand the reason behind the minimum comment amount before you have do follow. Even many forums now have gone to a minimum post count before you can run a signature line for the same basic reason (meaningless post just for a link).
With my blog script I have a choice of do follow or no follow link on a per comment basis. Therefore I kinda pick and choose whom I give a do follow to. If they have added to the conversation, I am more likely to do follow link on the comment.
The do or no follow seems to really come into play with Google but not so much with Yahoo. I also know that Google is God & we should respect that but, even with a ‘no follow juice boost’ you are getting eyes on your name & any info you share when you leave comments. That sometimes counts for allot.
After watching this same conversation for awhile now -
I am trying to decide if someone post a comment & they have no follow links on their site should I give them no follow at mine?
If someone post & has do follow links on their site then they would get do follow from me?
That of course would surly lead to some mad people. LOL!
I’ll keep watching to see how other peoples ‘test’ turn out.

Steve - I didn’t think the leakage meant a whole lot either until I saw Garry’s remarks on it. He really did put a “spin” on it that I hadn’t read before…it’s linked above, you may want to check it out also.
Subscribe to comments - I feel ya buddy. LOL. Since I started my blog commenting strategy, my own emails have boosted several hundred per day or so.
It has improved my speed reading skills, so that ain’t all bad. LOL
Seriously though, as we bloggers try to stress so often, it’s not all about the comment itself. Rather it’s about building the community, friendships and connections.
In this regard, responding to those that respond to you, is just as important as Bloggers responding to comments in the first place. Know what I mean?
Now, there is another (I think it’s a plugin) that only sends the commenter an email if it’s a response to his/her comment…I think that’s how it works. perhaps it works with threaded comments (coming with WP 2.7), but I can’t say for sure yet.
“My” problem with this is, I really don’t want to lose the STC plugin, so that would actually send TWO emails for every comment…..I’m thinkin’ about it though.
LOL @ less comments - no way dude! It took months and a total blog re-format to get to this.
There’s 1 or 2 new posts coming in regards to what we’re discussing here…watch for it!

I thought about using that plugin “ages” ago, after getting bombarded with spam comments and the “yeah great post” … well you know them
I actually did install it at one point but like Yan, I just couldn´t get it to work right with the theme I was using at that moment …. come to think of it, I might give it another try now, after reading this post. LOL not that a lot of linkjuice would leave my door anyways, not that many comments at present.
Would love to see a follow up post on how you think it is working out for you, do you really think people that arrive on a blog thinking it is do-follow will actually double check on comment policy/do-follow/lucy link love plugins before dumping their comments on your blog?

Good afternoon, Dennis,
Let me start by saying that I think some people pay too much attention to trying to guess how Google works. Perhaps it’s worth the effort for some people, but not for me.
I’m not that interested in Google page rank.
What I’m interested in is real people who visit my websites, buy the products I recommend, participate in the conversations, and find what I write to be useful in some way.
I’m going to continue with the dofollow links in comments on my blog, and I really don’t care if it may lose some of my “link juice.” That’s not the point of blogging, for me.
As long as I continue to get more readers, rank well in the search engines, and earn a living doing what I love, I’ll be a happy blogger.
Yan’s interview with Garry is an interesting read, but I just don’t think I agree with the conclusions.
But, that’s the beauty of blogging. We can all have our opinions, and do what we want with our own blogs.
Act on your dream!

Sheryl - Good stuff, I’ll take it one paragraph at a time.
I’ve noticed this in some forums now also, and think it’s a great idea…far too much forum spam going around and it’s very distracting to real forum marketers.
I’m thinkin’ of doing the same when - err - if my forum goes up.
What blog script is that; can you share?
As with almost everything else so far, the other SE’s will follow the leader eventually…I’d bank on it.
You also made another good point on how it’s not just about the link-back…juiced or not it is STILL a very visible link for all to see and click on if they so desire…this is why its so important to not leave crappy spammy comments.
Also - even if they don’t pass juice, they still get INDEXED…so many never even take that into account.
This is the point I tried to get across again when discussing my Scratchback widget.
Last paragraph - ok this isn’t such a swell idea. LOL.
It reminds me of how the eBay feedback system got so screwy so fast with the “wait to see what the other guy does first” method.
We need to be BETTER then the other guy! (Or woman as the case may be.)

Hey John, I love the way you think and we do think A LOT alike; and not just on this issue.
But ya know, it is still important to potential advertisers (for someone thats into getting advertisers) and will be for the foreseeable future.
Plus…well yea, it does give me the warm and fuzzies sometimes to see the green thingy stickin’ out there…so to speak. LOL
Just a wee extra boost to think someone else thinks you’re “doin’ ok”.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Mirjam - Oh yea, I know the ones. LOL
“do you really think people that arrive on a blog thinking it is do-follow will actually double check on comment policy/do-follow/lucy link love plugins before dumping their comments on your blog?”
In short, yes. I’ve done it myself before I knew of these customizable ones. A LOT of pure link seekers will do it for sure.
In my case and others, it’s because many bloggers start off do follow, put up the badge, then switch to no follow and either forget to remove the badge or “forget” to remove the badge. (See the difference?)
It’s not so much that I care about the do follow as it is that I’m not going patronize a blogger that will actually try to scam just for comments.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Oops forgot, yes I will try to do a follow-up after a while….let us know also if you do reinstall it.

Hello again Dennis,
We run all of our blogs on the b2evolution script.
I started 1 blog with this script just so we could test it out. I ended up keeping it and do most of my ‘testing’ there. I will say that it is my favorite blog that we have. It goes against all the ‘proper’ rules of blogging, guess that is what makes it fun! I change keywords, tags, metatags.. on each of the 7 blogs now and again just to see what happens. LOL!
I belong to a site that has a few SEO experts and I am going to see what they have to say about the follow links - most of what they deal with are regular static sites not blogs.
A while back I saw a community of DoFollow blog owners but, can not remember where. I know that they police themselves as far as checking to make sure you are a DoFollow site.
As far as inner pages moving up in Google searches - I do allot of perma link (backlinking) and the post that I have done this with have shown great improvement.
Now I am off to check out JR’s RSS submission sites.
Most of my blog reading comes from following peoples comment links.
Have a great day!

Dennis,
I think Gary is wrong. Perhaps he knows what is correct but explained it wrong.
What Google says
The PR given for a link is divided by the number of links out. One link out has full value. 10 links out have 1/10th of the value.
Google does NOT say that having outbound links leaks your PR. Outbound links do not affect your PR (unless to bad sites). You cannot give away your PR. That is where I think Gary is wrong.
(if I am wrong on this point and someone can document it, please do)
BUT a good site should have good internal linking. Most of us have the highest PR for our home pages. Internal links from the home page will pass PR to other pages. IF you do follow links out, some of that PR will pass to the links out and some to the internal links. In this regard Gary is correct.
BUT the best way to pass PR internally is from the home page with the most PR, to the other pages that you want to rank highly. There generally are no comments on the home page, so do follow comments will not effect the amount of PR passed from the home page. So having do follow comments may not hurt your internal linking as much as you might think.
Furthermore, will requiring more comments simply cause “link-whoring spammers” (I just had to use that line) to add more unwanted comments?
TO me the quality of the comment is probably the most important, as to whether a comment gets to be followed or not. Does anyone make a plugin that lets you select by comment which ones get followed?
I think the best case for Do Follow is made here;
http://www.realestatebloglab.com/real-estate-blogging/a-fable-do-follow-and-comments/
In this post Dave Smith says you get more if you give more.
The choice to follow or not, is not a simple one. Hence I have procrastinated and made easier changes to my blog.

Steve - Even if it doesn’t stop the drivebys, it still works in my favor….if I don’t like the comment I can delete it as always….if the comment is even half ok I can keep it and they get no “juice” from it.
Another nifty little trick is to just edit out the URL….no traffic whatsoever is passed.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Hey Ned, thanks for the awesome feedback! Lets take a couple points…
“Google does NOT say that having outbound links leaks your PR. Outbound links do not affect your PR (unless to bad sites). You cannot give away your PR. That is where I think Gary is wrong.
(if I am wrong on this point and someone can document it, please do)”
Of course they do. All “followed” links give some juice. This is why Google killed and will continue to kill sites that sell links without No Follow attached.
Internal linking is a different issue, but you’re right; it is VERY important.
As for the rest regarding “link whores” lol, check out what I said to Steve right above you….easily taken care of with a click or two.
I haven’t read the Dave Smith article (yet) but I totally agree with give more to get more; this blog is proof of that in many ways.
I’m all about the love…to those that deserve it.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Pat - I went to your blog and it looks awesome from the home page.
Please look into a couple things though, ASAP…
1. Your single post page background is all red with no white; I can barely read a letter.
2. There is a fatal error showing under comments…It may very well be a conflict with plugins. If you need any help let me know.
3. Please install a subscribe to comments plugin (unless this is the error)…I’d love to subscribe to your blog, but much prefer it have this plugin as well.
Sorry to put this here, but I couldn’t find a contact page. (That would be #4

It’s fun to watch the number of comments on this post grow. I wonder if it has anything to do with your new policy?
Just so I’m adding something of value here, for Pat, if she reads this, I use IE6 and I see a white background on all the pages, but I also see the error message Dennis mentioned.
Shows that it’s important to look at your blog on multiple browsers.
~ Steve (aka the trade show guru)
PS. Yeh, I know IE6 is for cavemen but I’m waiting to upgrade until I get a new computer.

LOL Steve - I’m not even mentioning it in my actual comment policy.
Pat - Sorry I didn’t check it in IE….I just did in IE7 and it IS OK. However in Firefox (which a ton of users are switching too on a daily basis) individual post pages are ALL RED as I mentioned.
You may want to check it in another bowser or two also when you can.

Hi Dennis,
Do you know any good alternatives on this? I upgraded to WP2.7 beta 3.
By the way beta 3 is another overhaul of the back administration of wordpress, I am sure everybody will love it.
November 17th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Hi Wayne!
Alternatives to Lucias do follow plugin? There are quite a few of these plugins available now, just Google, Do Follow plugin and you’ll get some pages.
Are you saying Lucias doesn’t work with 2.7??
Btw, I don’t do BETA’s (yet, wait or a cool announcement) and I will never do them on any main blog of mine….way too many bad things happen to me. LOL

Hey Dennis,
I was already to post and then saw the letters IE. I had to wait until I could pull the flaming sharp sticks out of my eyes before I could do this reply.
OK, just joking so flames on the sharp sticks.LOL!
When you said ‘I do my share of internal linking as well, and it seems to work nicely! Is that what you meant?’
I call internal linking - links within a domain to other pages within the same domain.
I do that when I can within articles to make it a bit more of a pain in the butt for post thieves.
Of course you also have your internal links to your directories….
What I mean by ‘I do allot of perma link backlinks’ is when I post comments I try to leave a URL to an individual page not just the main domain URL.
In fact I am in the process of writing a post on a great way I do this and have been seeing hits. It will be a day before I get that post out as I started a a toy drive this morning on my blog.
Yes, I like to do several things at once.
I also see that a few other commenters are kinda with me on the dofollow links idea.
We may never know the ‘real’ answer and if we do - they will change the rule. LOL!
Since this is my 3rd post on this article am I now a comment whore? LOL!

Dennis - I got the CTR deduction from the following part of the interview:
Y: Understood! My question is even though I dollow all the outbound links, why Google rewarded that page with PR2?
G: Because Google finds the page to be valuable based of natural human behavior.
The page has had interest among people
People come and go
People come to see it… people leave
People link to it
People talk about it
Google knows
Google is not only a search engine but also an artificial intelligence, it monitors human behaviors
Pay close attention to what I bold faced. The leakage was balanced by having constant “human” activity which equates to having consistent CTR…what do you think on this

Sheryl - OK now we’re on the same page; yes that’s what I meant by internal linking also.
As for your permalink backlinks, I say BRAVO! That’s exactly what you should do.
I look forward to your upcoming post on it to see if I’m missing anything. Can you post a link here when it’s done please…I haven’t found how to subscribe to your blog via email.
A comment whore? Nope, not yet. In fact you’re sill no-follow. Hehe
The plugin works on a certain number of overall comments, not each individual post (easier this way anyway), so feel free to browse the blog.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Caleb - I see where you’re going but I think you’re oversimplifying it a bit.
What you say makes a lot of sense and I’m sure it’s a player, but there are sooo many things that go into the algorithm and it changes all the time, that trying to figure it out is like trying to hold back water…just ain’t worth it dude. LOL
For instance, you most certainly should have bolded linking, which is basically Googles backbone to ranking…they’ve made that one thing quite clear at least.
November 19th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
t sounds interesting and all, but I think for the time being, I’ll just continue on my DoFollow ways…I’m certainly going to be reading that post you linked to though after I finish posting this comment and subscribing to follow-ups by email

I just recently changed my blog to do follow from the Wordpress default no follow using sem do follow plugin. I have heard of the Lucia plugin however the only ones I really don’t want having followed links on my blog are spam comments and askimet is pretty good at getting those.

SEO - Akismet is awesome at controlling the auto-spam….like the porn with 1001 links in it.
What I’m controlling is the human spam…worthless drive by comments only designed for a link-back.

Hi Dennis,
This sounds like a good plugin. But at the moment I’ll just keep it status quo for me as my akismet filters my spam comments and I moderate them too. Perhaps I will in future. Thanks for sharing.

good info about this plugin. my thought about title here is that you use do follow but in same time u look like not use do follow before the comment change after countdown time to get title of comment do follow. very cool dofollow plus nofollow.

I wouldn’t mind the some of the drive-by responses I get if they’d at least TRY to contribute something to the conversation….but you’re right, most are in it for the link.
I will look into the Linky Love.

I also have a do follow blog and it’s just set to alert me to a first time commenter. My thinking is that if I approve you once and give you love then why would I stop loving you later. I’ll have to read the post in question but my previous readings show no proof of any of leeching away of page rank. It sounds like fear-mongering to me.

I’m sure Garry Conn is much more informed about the no-follow issue than I am but I’ve searched far and wide for anything remotely official from Google that removing the tag helps with PageRank or position.
It’s a big debate so this could be a cool experiment. Yan said he would experiment a little too so it will be interesting if you see any positive change. Too bad Google has to be so close mouthed about these matters like it was national security or something.

eh ya know Brian, it really doesn’t matter lol. Like I said, the main advantage to this particular plugin is still rewarding regulars while fooling the fools just dropping links never to be seen again.
December 15th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Hi Dennis,
I recommend you SEO Master and Robots Meta they are similar yet they have some functions that the other doesn’t have. I installed them recently you should check them out. As for the do follow I applied similar stuff in my blog I set it to 10 min for do follow. I also enabled top commenter only on the home page but reversed it because it altered the look of my template. So it is back on every page. Google hates site wide links some SEOs believe that they may even be discounted if not relevant enough. Still, no body knows for sure. One of the plugins I mentioned has a similar function to linky love 10 min for do follow. Check them out I am sure you will like them.

First time here saw your name around and I’m going to check out your contest post next. As far as do follow comment and keyword luv and all that we shall soon see what the effects of all those are soon enough we’re due for an update;) Anyway I keep them all and do foresee waking up and seeing that Page rank bar clean of the green
Ah it’s be nice to say who cares but everyone cares
I hope 2009 is the year that all bloggers reach out to each other and realize you can only go so far on your own;) Great attitude and blog
Peace Happy Holidays

Archie - I’ll check those out, but I dunno if I need extra function just for the purpose of do follow.
Google has made it quite clear that they do not like non-relevant sites linking to one another, so you are correct there.
December 16th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Hey John, welcome to the community!
I couldn’t agree more; all bloggers must reach out to each other. If we all tried to go it alone, no one would succeed much. it is most certainly a community based industry.
Thanks for the stumble!

This is a very good move. You’ll get a boost in comments from new bloggers and you’ll maintain your regulars, not to mention save some of your PR.

No Desi it’s not you, quite a few readers are waiting for it lol.
Mitch is correct, I was waiting anxiously and eagerly for 2.7 to arrive for it’s threaded integration (I’m already in meetings for my plugin addiction issues).
However, even as I type this I am on the hunt for the best threaded plugin…compatible with everything else and all that jazz. Due to reasons I won’t bore you with here, it doesn’t look like I will be upgrading for a bit.
Brian’s Threaded comments is in the lead. I’ll post about it once I choose and install one.
December 31st, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Brian’s Threaded Comments is the plugin I use, and it seems to work pretty good. I’ve been satisfied with the performance. However, I have recently been playing a bit wtih 2.7 and really like some of the things they have integrated…I may be upgrading in the near future!
