  • Whoopsy Commentluv Is Busted! You Have Permission To Leave ONE Link.

    Oh dear, I must first apologize for not noticing myself and thank the people that informed me. It’s unfortunately a bad combination of replying quickly and overall taking the plugin for granted…..I never even noticed. My bad.

    Second, I am ECSTATIC over the fact that the broken CL has hardly diminished my comment ratio; this says A LOT about our little community here. Not only have most if not all my regulars continued commenting here, but plenty of newcomers don’t seem to care either…..thank you all for that!

    In fact, that is what led to this very post. As most of you know by now, I am really trying to complete a blog move before the end of the year. Once the move is complete, all the plugins on the new blog will be updated and in perfect working order; I really don’t have time to mess with it now.

    Defying my own comment policy, I am temporarily allowing each of you to leave ONE NEATLY FORMED LINK at the bottom of your comments; and it does not necessarily have to be your “last post” as Commentluv pulls. It will also be do follow ;) .

    For a neatly formed DoFollow link with anchor text (even better then commentluv lol), use the proper HTML exactly as follows -

    —————————————————————————————————-

    <a href=”http://www.ridiculouslylonglink.com” target=”new”><strong>This Is The Anchor Text</strong></a>

    —————————————————————————————————-

    Just Replace “http://www.ridiculouslylonglink.com” with your URL and “This Is The Anchor Text” with your anchor text. Simple.

    Please do not abuse this privilege. A prime example of abuse might be 20 comments all pointing to some sort of affiliate page. This won’t look good to others seeing it either.

    I’ll be watching…and so will others. ;)

      It’s nice when people take the time out to tell you something is wrong with your site. Recently someone told me they couldn’t add any comments because they couldn’t read the ‘captcha’, so I removed that functionality.

      Good luck on the move and don’t forget I’m here to help you in anyway.

      My last post is all about building backlinks

      Hope that link looks right after pressing “Submit Comment”!

      Thanks.

      @Andrew @ webuildyourblog.com,

      I know. There are other problems when it comes to commenting. One is the captcha thing and I think that its function is really great. It’s just that sometimes, no one takes time to tell you that there’s something wrong. I think that there should be a clear distinction between anti-spam features and errors when it comes to dropping off a comment. Thanks for this.:)

      Andrew @ WeBuildYourBlog.com Reply:

      @Letterhead Printing | UPrinting.com, I replaced the ‘captcha’ with the WP-SpamFree plugin and it works great!

    3. GrowMap @Internet Strategist Says:

      While CommentLuv may have originally brought us together, it is each blog’s content and interaction that keeps us coming back. That is what makes our blogs different and creates our communities.

      Would you rather read a famous blog with great content but where the blogger doesn’t acknowledge or reply to your comments or join a community where the bloggers and guest bloggers make time to answer your questions and visit your blog too? That is what makes us different.

      Now that there are so many dofollow blogs it makes sense that we focus on consistently interacting with specific bloggers. I am diligently working on processes that will make it easier to connect regularly. I’ll share them in my blog when I get further along.

      Dennis has been my most regular commentator lately and I hope many of his readers will drop by. The best way to get a feel for what I write about is to scan the categories in the right sidebar column or my Best of GrowMap post.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @GrowMap @Internet Strategist,

      Nicely put and exactly why I don’t comment on the “big blogs”; that’s actually tough for me as I don’t even like to read blogs I don’t want to comment on; I read/comment on so many it seems like a waste of time, but they do have invaluable content sometimes.

      Did you read this post? It was on my most popular list for like 8 months; still would be if I had more then 7. ;)

    4. Karl Foxley Says:

      That’s a great privilege you are sharing Dennis. It’s great to see that you have a community that shows you ‘love’ whether you have the CL plugin installed or not, this is a great achievement and a sign that you are building solid relationships.

      I look forward to seeing you and your plugins at your new home (website) when you finally get there.

      Here’s hoping that your move is as stress-free as possible.

      I can’t remember exactly from which blog I have recently encountered the term ‘Gratitude Blogging’ where the author says putting the focus on your readers and not thinking of blogging for the sake of monetary returns is one key to effortless successful blogging.

      Considering your generosity, I believe you are already practicing gratitude blogging without knowing it, buddy. :)

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @James Moralde,

      Oh I know it! Hehe, although I hadn’t heard that particular term, kinda cool.

      Seriously though, almost right from the very beginning it’s been community first…”almost” because my VERY FIRST not so good blog was simply crap post after crap post trying to score some cash; this was when I as subscribed to every BS “guru” on the net - oops.

      Blog for the money first and you’re a hard-selling used care salesman…sure the money may trickle in, but are you happy at days end? Are your readers/customers happy with you?

    6. Sire Says:

      Actually Dennis, if you’re a member of commentluv you can select from your last 10 posts.

      I wonder what caused the plugin to misbehave?

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Sire, I kniow about last 0 posts; not sure how that applies here though.

      Like most it misbehaves sometimes; rare though, I last wrote it broke over a year ago. :)

      @Dennis Edell, Well it applies because you said in your post;

      I’m curious why you include a strong tag INSIDE your neatly formed HTML. I don’t think I would normally include a strong tag inside of an a tag. Is it better practice to put the strong OUTSIDE the a tag?

      I merely wanted the anchor text to be bolded, so I figured that was best. I don’t know if it’s better or makes a difference inside or out, but it’s a good question. I’ll try to find out. :)

    12. Rian Says:

      I actually rely only on commentluvs last post function. I do not leave links anymore within the comment. That way the comment will be as serious and sincere as possible instead of obviously making it a do follow function. :) Thanks for the advise.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Rian,

      Generally speaking, that’s an excellent approach to commenting, and as it should be done; if offered though, grab it! LOL

      I’m not sure what Commentluv has to do with Do Follow? Two separate plugins/functions.

    13. Tinh Says:

      Great news but you should be harder if you keep this open. Why don’t you use commentluv plugin?

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Tinh,

      You misunderstood the post, that’s OK. I do use the plugin but it is currently broken. :)

      Second, by not providing a real name in the name field, I had to fish your comment from the spam filter and de-link your URL. In the future please help yourself and I by ensuring proper linking of your name.

      Check the comment policy linked right above the comment box at the bottom and be sure to include a real name before your keywords. Thanks! :) .

      Most won’t offer the option, if their plugins break they just wait to fix it or get rid of it altogether.

    15. Anne @ b6s.net Says:

      Have you disabled Commentluv? it’s badge is still showing up in the comment form.

      CommentLuv is nice but it’s def not the reason I leave comments here ;) I’ll keep doing it whether you have it activated or not.

      By the way, which dofollow plug-in do you use? I see some names are nofollow and some not, so I guess you have one with the special settings?

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Anne @ b6s.net,

      It seems to have disabled itself. lol.

      Thanks so much, readers like you make me proud to be here :) .

      Lucias Linky Love. It gives the option of setting a number of how many comments an individual has to make before they all become do follow…..tricking the drive-by spammers who think they cleverly scored a link, never to return. ;)

      Anne @ b6s.net Reply:

      @Dennis Edell,
      Thanks! I needed a quick link. I may just install this on some of my blogs to see how it’s doing. Still have to think about it though. I don’t actually mind drive-by commenters as long as their comments are good quality.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Anne @ b6s.net,

      No think just do it!! LOL.

      Seriously though, I think it is the best of them all so far (there are many do follow plugins now); not JUST for that feature, although it is the one that made it famous, but there are a few admin features inside it.

      “Good quality” is different for all I guess, but I was referring to the obvious “nice post” styled garbage.

      You don’t have to set a number if you don’t mind, but the option is there. :)

    16. Alex Sysoef Says:

      Dennis,

      I find many people who leave valid comments, while appreciate the link back, do the commenting for the participation more then anything else!

      Sucks that commentluv is broken - but it doesn’t really matter when one is simply contributing to conversation.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Alex Sysoef,

      Hey Alex, thanks for taking the time, I really appreciate it and you’re right!

    17. Michelle Mangen Says:

      First off I just wanted to say it’s because of CommentLuv that I am here on your blog for the first time. I had dropped in to see Kim @ Anti Social Development’s latest post and was very intrigued by this post title so I had to hop over here to read it.

      Secondly - was even happier to stumble across Gabe from Free Blog Help here as he’s one of my newest “blog buddies”. (Hi Gabe!)

      Thirdly, I wasn’t aware of the fact we could pick a blog post to show with CommentLuv - will totally have to check that out sometime soon - not tonight though as I love my newest blog too much to override it!

      Glad I came across your site - good luck with your new blog work! :-)

      Yep, wherever you see the CL plugin, click the heart and the drop down menu will appear; but you have to register your site on the commentluv website first…it’s free to do so and comes with other benefits.

      I will be keeping your link close at hand; I think I am becoming dangerously close to REALLY needing a VA. lol

    18. Mitch Says:

      Okay, tell the truth; it’s because you haven’t updated your WP in a long time, isn’t it? I bet you’re still running 2.6.3. lol

      I’m not going to add a link; as you said, I don’t write here for the link anyway.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      As for being rare, yes and no. There are thousands of blogs by now that use the commentluv plugin (working) to reward commenters, but yes, as i said above it is rare for admins to offer links if they don’t have it working or installed.

      I hope to see you around more often. :)
      The link you left seems to be broken.

    20. Michelle Mangen Says:

      You will be seeing me around more as I put your RSS feed into my TweetMiner for extra special TLC and Tweeting!

      I’m trying to become more committed to spending some time replying on blogs (I’m a major Twitter addict and this is a forced detox step - LOL).

      After commenting here (and realizing after the fact that I had done my URL wrong) I hopped back over to Gabe’s site to comment on his theme immunity post and tested out the fun coolness I have learned now about CommentLuv. I did register my site there about a week ago but haven’t really figured out what all the other goodies are yet that I get with being registered there.

      What other benefits do you like most about their site?

      And if you ever need a VA I’d love to chat and if I can’t or don’t do something I always do my best to refer to another VA that does. One of the most awesome things about being a VA is that I can do only the work I am most passionate about! :-)

      I digress on VA stuff :-)

      Have a super, duper awesome Friday. I should get my tail back to work!

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Michelle Mangen,

      I did notice the tweet, so thank you! A Twitter addiction ain’t bad as long as it’s productive (not the latest cat pee on the chair story, lol).

      Keep it up, constructive blog commenting can be an amazing source of traffic, among other things. I know you read that everywhere, but this is honest to goodness from some serious personal experience.

      CL site benefits? I’ll get back to you on that. He’s made some major upgrades/improvements since I was there last (first site very beginning) and I haven’t had the time to browse.

      One of the most awesome things about being a VA is that I can do only the work I am most passionate about!

      Perhaps when we do chat, you can start by listing those…might save time. lol

      NOW you can get back to work! LOL

    21. Holly Jahangiri Says:

      CommentLuv is one of my favorite plug-ins (and I’m the lucky one who gets to claim bragging rights as the first person ever to install it on a Blogger blog, too) - largely because it’s fun, it INVITES readers to leave a backlink, it’s EASY, and its author - Andy Bailey - is so responsive when there are problems.

      But make no mistake - CommentLuv has NO bearing whatsoever on whether I comment or not.

      One thing that does make a difference: Don’t make me jump through hoops to comment. (Yeah, I’m already signed up with Disqus and Blogger, so those aren’t a big deal - and I don’t mind entering my name/email/URL - but difficult captcha codes, math problems, offbeat commenting services I’m not already signed up with - those are deterrents to my leaving comments.)

      The BIGGEST inducement to comment? You’re a real person and you talk to me on my blog, too. :) Thanks for visiting earlier, and thank you for the kind words on my guest post at “Famous Bloggers.” I appreciate that, and I am pleased as punch you liked it enough to subscribe!

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Holly Jahangiri,

      So it was YOU! I remember him writing about this mystery nag (totally kidding!) lol. Hes almost scary with his response times, ain’t he?

      Woohoo! FINALLY! Wait a sec, hold on…yep I just fell in love with you. Someone actually gets the !#$%&*^ math captcha issue!

      I think you might get a kick outa this.

      You’re very welcome, and thank YOU for being there (and here) ;) .

      Holly Jahangiri Reply:

      Oh, yes, @Dennis Edell, that was me! I think he DID call me a nag - something like that - but it was all in fun. As I recall, I told him I preferred the term “Programmer’s Muse” - but nag was fair enough.

      How could I NOT get the math captcha issue? I know older bloggers who can’t SEE the letters, and me - well, I’m just bad at math. I get annoyed having to do Kindergarten-level practice problems no, in my forties. The one on Blogger doesn’t bother me MUCH, because it’s pretty readable - but when it’s not, do I bother? No.

      I’ll leave my comments where they feel welcome, and I try to do the same for my visitors, because I want them to feel welcome, too. One nice thing about having a self-hosted WordPress installation - .htaccess. :)

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Holly Jahangiri,

      LOL @ programmers muse. No worries Holly, you would most certainly be nag #2 behind me. If I were ever to visit overseas I would owe dinner, drinks, and lap dances for months!

      Ha! Forget eyesight and bad math skills, when I have to re-write a 5 minute comment because it tells me I got 1+1 wrong (true story) I start loading the missile launcher.

      Commenting on Blogger blogs - don’t EVEN get me started. I don’t, period. That’s a whole ‘nother post though. lol

      Messing with the .htaccess. A braver person then I you are ;) .

      You’re always welcome here!

      Edited to add: I can’t seem to escape this nagging feeling that part of that was a secret; hmm…..

      Well it sure as heck won’t be me! (I’m more careful what favors I promise strangers on the Internet!) :D

      I just posted the tutorial - more of a general guideline, since it’s kind of a case of the blind leading the blind (I’m no graphic artist - I just like to play with software and make friends happy): http://jahangiri.us/news/2009/12/05/how-to-put-your-friends-face-on-a-milk-carton/

      @Holly Jahangiri,

      Nice work, did you really get slammed for it?

      Holly Jahangiri Reply:

      @Dennis Edell, slammed for it? Oh, no - the “model” saw my Monday News & Views, where I’d put another blogger’s face on a milk carton, and asked for a tutorial - volunteering their own avatar for the project. ;) The thing is, I had to go through all the steps, take screen shots, really think it through - because I really have no idea what I’m doing. I just like to play around with Paint Shop Pro, and can occasionally fake artistic talent.

      Dennis Edell Reply:

      @Holly Jahangiri, You definitely look like you got some talent brewing. ;)

      Welcome to the community! I don’t recall seeing you around before (my apologies if I’m wrong). Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it and I hope to see you around more often. I’ll be visiting your site soon ;) .

      I noticed that it wasn’t working some time ago. It didn”t stop me from coming by and commenting though. I’ve noticed comment luv broken on several sites.

      Note how many of your regulars didn’t bother adding a link. That says something about your community.

      @Ned Carey,

      Oh yes I have noticed and you’re right, the people here are awesome! ;)

      Eh, no apologies necessary, you made a nice clean link. I’m thinking of making an exception on the new blog for those that for whatever reason don’t get caught by commentluv.

      Ah OK qualification is needed here. I’m not a programmer/coder/hacker of any kind, quite honestly going “into” things in any way scares the living crapola outa me.

      ANYTHING changed from the inside is a hack to me. LOL

      Side note: for a well known expression it’s really weird…has anyone stopped to think that living crap would be just plain nasty??
