Captcha Issue: Why You WILL Lose My Comment - Possibly My Subscription
Please don’t misunderstand. I’m all for fighting comment spam as much if not more then the next blogger. If you desire the use of a captcha or two, go for it. I fully support you.
For cryin out loud though people, use one that is CLEARLY VISIBLE.
I read and comment on a LOT of Blogs in the sphere and the pure disdain I have for those teeny tiny little question/answer captcha’s placed in amongst the other fields (name email URL) cannot be measured with todays technology.
A real PITA if there ever was one. Btw, for those that don’t realize, that’s PAIN IN THE ASS. Who’s brainchild were these?
Now I know the first silly question popping off all over, “If you have to fill in those fields anyway, how can you miss it?”
Answer 1: Easily. One click of the AutoFill button within the Google toolbar takes care of it.
Answer 2: I simply double click the field and pick from a saved list. This is useful if I want to change up the URL
Answer 3: If you read and comment on as many as I do on a particular day the fields are already filled in when you get there. I never even look up.
None of which takes more then a second or 2.
I take as much care as humanly possible to always leave a proper comment. Whether it’s useful to the post, the blogger him/herself, other readers/commenter’s or whatever.
I am so tired of having it all wiped out in the blink of an eye because I missed the ridiculous tiny captcha and have to back-space!
Final thoughts, then it’s your turn…
I’ve never personally used, need, or wanted anything other then Akismet. But like I said, you want a captcha, go for it.
Captcha’s are their to foil ELECTRONIC BOTS. Size makes no difference to a bot. Why make it that much more difficult for the human element that you DO want on your blog?
And finally - Fair Warning: If your silly little captcha catches me at the wrong time, you WILL lose my comment. That’s a no-brainer.
Even worse, you will very possibly lose my readership - and since ALL the blogs I read more then once are through email subscriptions…..you just LOST A SUBSCRIBER.
For no good reason whatsoever.
OK your turn - am I spot on here or do you enjoy having to rewrite comments, taking up your precious time?
Please let me know…:-)
Never stop pushing forward!
Dennis

You’re right on, actually.
I’m toying with the idea of losing Recaptcha and instead, using the math thingee for spam protection - not everyone knows you can click the little ‘refresh’ button on the Recaptcha to get a new image.

ACK!!! Nooooooooooooo those friggin math thing’s are exactly the type I’m referring too…or at least one of them.
NAME
EMAIL
math captcha with the tiniest font imaginable
URL
Yours is RIGHT IN MY FACE - perfect! And even better now since it seems to have moved up some with the new theme.
You have a good point though, I only found the refresh aspect as a sour of the moment test.
Can you add a line through admin stating “refresh for new captcha”….something like that?
If you do, please let me know. I’ll update my post and point to yours as a good example

I can surely relate to this. I get used to copy my comments before hitting the submit button, especially longer ones.
However, I dislike blurred captcha most. It is hard to read and causes more troubles than it helps.

OMG OMG OMG, I so feel you on this, some of those captchas are SOOOO LAME and I am with you, I don’t spam, I read blogs that are helpful to me and when I take the time to leave a comment, it is to be helpful and join in a discussion, and if I have to jump through hoops with some lame PITA (I love that Dennis :-)), too small to read captcha then I’m out of there.
And you are right Dennis, AKISMET is all you need, that takes care of the spammers, why would any blogger want to irritate visitors and commentators I will never understand, and I wonder if they even check how the captcha looks on their site?
And thank you for your active participation on my site.
Thanks Dennis,

Wendy - I edited your first line a bit LOL but you’re quite correct!
The big “complaint” most have about Akismet, is the fact that it sometime catches legit comments.
So? If it takes more then a minute to scan the spam then you are just not doing it enough, and I KNOW these people are in there blogs at least every other day.
Right now I have 49 comments in Akismet, I think I’ll take 30 seconds now to scroll it

I am in a pickle about this one. My friend and I, our site uses Akismet, and it started getting lots of spam recently and Akismet is doing its job. I was debating on whether to use Captcha.
After reading this, I think I have decided to just have Akismet do its thing and take the time to just look through the comments and approve if needed.
Thanks a bunch Dennis for putting this in light.

Ha, ha, ha… Oh Dennis, I occasionally have a similar rant on - not only about the clarity of captcha images - but the size of the post text! One could be forgiven for wondering whether some bloggers suspect Google of slapping sites for presenting posts in a comfortably readable font size (oh, and don’t get me started on font color and backgrounds)!

Oh Dennis,
And I thought I was the only one having this problem. Now with your post I can say I HATE CAPCHAS. Some of them are not meant for humans anyway. You have to second guess what the hell is written. Would you call them alphabets if they were blurred or crossed out or funny shaped. It’s an insult to humans to be subjected to this ‘are you human’ test. Possibly meant for aliens, or Terminator.

Exactly right my friend. I’ve since come to learn though that if you refresh enough times (before writing) you will eventually come up with a clear one.
LOL I always get them right too, WHEN I notice them….the itty bitty ones that you pass right by are the ones that get me.
Although I have hit some that actually get the math wrong..I think I know what 1+1 is and it tells me no?

Hi Peter -
I just installed Captcha and I tried to pick one based on readability. I did it because for some unknown I started getting a lot of spam. I use AKISMET also but it’s not perfect. I have found perfectly good comments flagged as possible spam by AKISMET and some missed that went to moderation.
Since I started using Captcha I have had one spam comment. I had no intention of using Captcha at first but when it started getting 30 spam comments in a half hour I changed my mind.

I finally found time to do that and added threaded comments and comment editing. When I started the blog I didn’t have a clue that it would take a lot of searching for plugins that were compatible with the version of WP I was using and with each other. It’s been an adventure but a good one. I had actually been thinking about adding more features to my comments but it was you mentioning it the got me into action. I needed a push in that direction and you came along at the perfect time. Thanks again for the much appreciated and needed suggestion.

I am always afraid that spam filters will catch legitimate e-mails or comments. One of the things I like about Akismet is that it is easy to scan through the spam to search for false positives.
I need to install a contact form that works with Akismet.
December 24th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Good point Ned. If one must install a captcha, make sure you are able to scan it for legit emails….I’m sure they all catch some here and there.
December 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
I agree with you totally. I hate captchas. Sometimes I will go, it depends, if I have to get through a captcha. It depends on my mood and how much time I have. I know the more things a blogger uses to stop a reader from commenting, the more he is setting himself up not to get comments. So why do that? As a blogger I enabled every feature I could find on my blog to make it as open to comments as possible. One thing I did besides remove the captcha login app was remove the moderation app. Then I set up my comments to open up in a box under the post just like your set up here.
Thanks for getting this message out, maybe it will help others see that they don’t need captchas either — and that they should make commenting as easy as possible. The only thing I would have to take into consideration is spamming if you don’t have moderation. But since I have gone unmoderated, I have had no spamming! When my blog was on a different blogging platform I left the blog wide open and got more spamming than I expected. Now I leave my blog wide open without captcha’s moderation, or spamming filters, and get no spamming at all. So it works for me

December 27th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
First I like to say I’ve never had spam on blogspot lol and have had a blog there for years. Never thought of spam there. Maybe it’s the topic (Alzheimer’s Disease). Get a lot of visitors - no spam.
When I got a real WordPress blog it wasn’t a problem at first. I tolerated the little maintenance it took to keep things under control. Akismet was good for when comment spam was a minor annoyance. But you still need to go in and moderate what Akismet catches because sometimes it will trap a legitimate comment. Once your comment spam level gets to a certain point it becomes very time consuming to even go through what Akismet has trapped. This happened to me once I actually made PR. Once my comment spam hit the 50 per hour mark I installed a captcha.
The spent a of time trying different captcha solutions.
I finally found one that fit what I was looking for. Easy to read. Only 4 letter to enter. Ability to choose a different selection by the visitor and allow to listen to the required entry in audio. It does trap anything. If the right letters are entered it still gets filtered by Akismet. If it’s entered right it goes through and if not tells the commentor it was entered wrong at which point they can try again or go away.
I feel if you’re not passionate enough about what you’re going to comment to enter 4 letters it wasn’t worth saying. If it’s because your too lazy it was going to be one of those Blah Blah comments any way. I you’re annoyed don’t bother and you don’t need to be annoyed and neither do I. I know it takes so much effort when commenting and typing all those letters I barely have the strength to enter 4 extra letters to get my comment posted. lol
Even taking regular precautions the unexpected can happen. I have a habit of checking links on legitimate comments to see where they go just in case. They always look good and can be good at first. I have gone back later and rechecked and found one site had put up a redirect to a porn site. Not friendly for a “G” rated blog.
Another thing you might what to consider is do any of the links go to a black listed site.
John Collins´s last blog post..Why Buy A Domain Name When Using Blogger Or
December 27th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
My background is in web accessibility, and I can tell you that CAPTCHAs not only make a site less usable for people, they can also prevent users of assistive technology for ever being able to comment at all!
There are a few sites that offer what they THINK is a reasonable alternative, an audio version, yet they are often even more difficult to decipher than the visual ones.
Like you, I use AKISMET and haven’t considered using a CAPTCHA. But if I did, I would want to use something that required human intelligence (like, what is the third word in the last paragraph of this post).
(and yes, I am totally working on my “10 comments so that I’ll be followed” on your blog!)

Hey John, I’m not sure if you’ve been here or not so welcome!
Interestingly enough you’re not the first I’ve heard from saying no spam on a blogger blog; I wonder why that is.
Akismet’s been good to me with almost 25K caught so far. True it does catch legit ones from time to time, but I’m in my blog so often, I don’t usually have more then 50 or so at a time to scroll through.
I’m happy to hear you actually took the time to locate a decent humanizable captcha (look mom a new word lol).
I agree with you on the too lazy-non passionate part for not entering the letters in the first place, however what really annoys me with those is, if I DO somehow enter it wrong, most of them delete the comment when you backspace to re-enter.
If I happen to type out a thoughtful, constructive 2+ paragraph comment (as I often do), only to see it wiped out by the silly captcha, there’s a good chance I will not repeat it…..this is not lazy or non-passionate
Very good suggestion btw, on checking the links even on legit comments.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Andrea - I really like your idea for a captcha. At least it will make them read the whole post…hopefully lol.
You’re a naughty girl though, you gave away my secret number!
December 28th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Hi Dennis -
I agree with the problem of losing all the effort put into a worthy post only to see it vanish when miss entering a captcha. That was one thing I didn’t want because I too have fallen victim to this mischievous ploy. When I re-enter the comment it never seems to have the same flavor of the original.
I think some may also have an invisible timer and if you exceed the allotted time limit it causes a similar fate. Perhaps it does a character count and that’s what triggers the dreaded blank comment box on submission.
I have on occasion copied my comment into notepad before hitting submit just in case. It has saved me a few times. This was true when commenting on (I’ll just use his initials) Joel C’s blog which I no longer visit. Not because of that. Tt was the type of post and the quality of commentors.
If you enter the captcha wrong with the plugin I am using you see a page with a banner across it that instructs you to - Error: You entered in the wrong Captcha phrase. Press your browsers back button and try again. When you do your comment is still there. If any one is interested I’ll save you the searching and testing I did and tell you which one it is.
SI CAPTCHA - It’s free and in the WP plugin area. I’ll also warn you that when I first installed it the captcha was below the submit button. This is a possibility clearly reported in the Read Me txt. The solution is stated well also. It involves editing comment.php and moving a line of code. The line I moved was 4th line up from the bottom and placed it to become 7th from the bottom. The captcha must be above the submit button to work. That was all I had to do.
