I totally agree Rick, they are so not needed at all. Especially if you have something as powerful as Akismet....or one of the other 132 plugins that don't interrupt the commenters ability to comment.

I have seen some captures that were like what is one plus 3. Following Andrea's comment. But I would still like to see captchas in blog posts eliminated. I comment to ezine articles a lot. They are all nofollow but they still seem to show up and they come from power pages. EA has a capture on their comments but it is easy for me to put in.

I totally agree with the little captures.. The really irritating part is a lot of them still have nofollow links after we put in the capture.

I see you went to Lucia's link. Great

Hey John, I also try to remember to copy my comment whenever I see a captcha, just in case. I've also seen one (which I can't remember now) that has your comment on the error page itself for copying just in case...I thought that was really cool.

Thanks for the plugin name, I really appreciate you sharing; as well as the code instructions.

Hi Dennis -

I agree with the problem of losing all the effort put into a worthy post only to see it vanish when miss entering a captcha. That was one thing I didn't want because I too have fallen victim to this mischievous ploy. When I re-enter the comment it never seems to have the same flavor of the original.

I think some may also have an invisible timer and if you exceed the allotted time limit it causes a similar fate. Perhaps it does a character count and that's what triggers the dreaded blank comment box on submission.

I have on occasion copied my comment into notepad before hitting submit just in case. It has saved me a few times. This was true when commenting on (I'll just use his initials) Joel C's blog which I no longer visit. Not because of that. Tt was the type of post and the quality of commentors.

If you enter the captcha wrong with the plugin I am using you see a page with a banner across it that instructs you to - Error: You entered in the wrong Captcha phrase. Press your browsers back button and try again. When you do your comment is still there. If any one is interested I'll save you the searching and testing I did and tell you which one it is.

SI CAPTCHA - It's free and in the WP plugin area. I'll also warn you that when I first installed it the captcha was below the submit button. This is a possibility clearly reported in the Read Me txt. The solution is stated well also. It involves editing comment.php and moving a line of code. The line I moved was 4th line up from the bottom and placed it to become 7th from the bottom. The captcha must be above the submit button to work. That was all I had to do.

Andrea - I really like your idea for a captcha. At least it will make them read the whole post...hopefully lol.

You're a naughty girl though, you gave away my secret number! ;)

Hey John, I'm not sure if you've been here or not so welcome!

Interestingly enough you're not the first I've heard from saying no spam on a blogger blog; I wonder why that is.

Akismet's been good to me with almost 25K caught so far. True it does catch legit ones from time to time, but I'm in my blog so often, I don't usually have more then 50 or so at a time to scroll through.

I'm happy to hear you actually took the time to locate a decent humanizable captcha (look mom a new word lol).

I agree with you on the too lazy-non passionate part for not entering the letters in the first place, however what really annoys me with those is, if I DO somehow enter it wrong, most of them delete the comment when you backspace to re-enter.

If I happen to type out a thoughtful, constructive 2+ paragraph comment (as I often do), only to see it wiped out by the silly captcha, there's a good chance I will not repeat it.....this is not lazy or non-passionate ;)

Very good suggestion btw, on checking the links even on legit comments. :)

My background is in web accessibility, and I can tell you that CAPTCHAs not only make a site less usable for people, they can also prevent users of assistive technology for ever being able to comment at all!

There are a few sites that offer what they THINK is a reasonable alternative, an audio version, yet they are often even more difficult to decipher than the visual ones.

Like you, I use AKISMET and haven't considered using a CAPTCHA. But if I did, I would want to use something that required human intelligence (like, what is the third word in the last paragraph of this post).

(and yes, I am totally working on my "10 comments so that I'll be followed" on your blog!)
